Hawaii returns to the rainbow

More than a decade after Hawaii’s football team dropped the “Rainbow” from their name, the Rainbow Warriors are making a comeback as the designated moniker for all men’s teams at UH:

“The decision on February 13 to change the nickname of the men’s teams to Warriors has generated a lot of discussion and we have received both positive and negative feedback,” Ben Jay, UH athletics director, said. “We listened to the public discussion and we went back to the original two questions we asked ourselves – who are we and what is representative of the islands?”

If we may be so bold as to help answer that last question, may we suggest that the above hat, available for sale in the UH Rainbowtique, would make a fine design for a new football helmet?

So, about Matthew Thomas’ request for a release from his Florida State scholarship: It turns out that, as Thomas intimated last week, the ‘Noles are not super eager to let a five-star linebacker, the latest in a long line of Miami’s Booker T. Washington High football products, get out before he even gets there. From the Tallahassee Democrat: “During a break at the ACC spring meetings here Tuesday morning, FSU athletic director Randy Spetman told the Democrat that the school was surprised by Thomas’ request and has no intention of releasing him from his LOI.”

Thomas explained last week that he signed with FSU at the behest of his mother. Ranked as the nation’s second-best linebacker in the class of 2013 by Rivals.com, Thomas would prefer to attend Georgia or USC.

This is way better than the guy in our inbox who wants to make sure we know we can divine Wes Lunt’s transfer destination by realizing we cannot spell “Lunt” without “UT.”

We’ve got an update on Jordan Webb’s and Alex Lewis’ assault charges, and, for the second time this offseason, a brick wall appears in a Colorado football-related police report. Why do we notice these things? From the Daily Camera:

According to the report, Bussey and Lewis bumped into each other, which led to a verbal argument and a shoving match. The friend then told police Lewis repeatedly shoved Bussey into a brick wall, causing his head to hit the wall several times. The friend told police Webb then came over and the two men shoved Bussey to the ground and began punching him.

Click through for more details, including Lewis’ self-reported ability to drink like an actual buffalo: “Lewis said he’d had six glasses of wine, 10 beers and six shots of various other alcohol that night. He did not know how much Webb had to drink.”

    1) Bob De Carolis seems like a pretty chill AD.

    2) If we had a cutout of Jadeveon Clowney’s uniform we would carry it in front of us at all times, mostly to minimize wait time in retail lines through implied malice.

From the Future College Football Department: South Florida and Florida State have booked a two-year home-and-home series, to be played in Tallahassee in 2015 and Tampa in 2016. The teams have met twice before, with the Bulls knocking off the ‘Noles on the road in 2009 and FSU returning the favor last season.

As is customary ’round these parts, we present to you a college football coach singing at Wrigley Field. Today’s victim: Rod Carey of Northern Illinois, who made the traditional pilgrimage for area coaches to last night’s Cubs baseball match (that’s what they’re called, right?) against the Rockies.

The song, and its surprising qualities, after the jump:
