Kentucky football player Ashely Lowery’s condition has been upgraded from stable to satisfactory, according to a statement released by his family. Lowery, a junior safety on the Wildcats, remains hospitalized in Georgia after a serious auto accident on Saturday morning.

“On behalf of the Lowery family, we’d like to thank everyone for their concerns and prayer,” the family said in a statement. “From Georgia to Lexington, we can’t thank everyone enough. You are like family to us.

“The only official comment from the hospital is that his condition has been upgraded from stable to satisfactory and his injuries are no longer life threatening. We expect a full recovery. Again, thank you so much for all the prayers and support.”

One year after winning the starting quarterback job at Stanford, Josh Nunes’ football career is over.

The Cardinal announced Monday that Nunes will take a medical retirement and wrap his career with the program.

The decision most likely resulted from a bicep injury Nunes suffered in the weight room after the season, which kept him out of spring practice.

Somber news out of Las Cruces, where New Mexico State has released details of a previously unspecified injury that cornerback Miles Washington sustained over the weekend:

New Mexico State redshirt freshman cornerback Miles Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.) suffered a spinal cord injury in Saturday’s spring practice at Aggie Memorial Stadium. Emergency surgery was performed by doctors at University Medical Center in El Paso.

Miles is resting in the intensive care unit and will remain there for the near future. The next 48 hours will be critical but at this time no further information on his condition is available.

The NM State Athletics Department asks that the privacy of the family be respected.

Our best wishes to Washington for a full and rapid recovery. Our thoughts are with his family and the New Mexico State football community.

  • Which BYU quarterback is where? A primer

A quick review of the e’er-spinning carousel of BYU quarterbacks:

    • Riley Nelson and James Lark have graduated.

    • Jake Heaps is now “the man to beat” at Kansas.

    • Taysom Hill’s work in spring ball is being limited by his coaches, following last October’s season-ending LCL injury.

    • Ammon Olsen, working with the first team in BYU’s spring game, sustained a partial PCL tear on Saturday, according to Bronco Mendenhall, who also said Olsen likely will not require surgery.

Nobody would blame BYU for starting an actual cougar at quarterback for the remainder of the offseason, is our point.

Washington State wide receiver Mansel Simmons was reportedly hospitalized over the weekend following an alleged assault by an Idaho football player, according to the Cougars’ Scout site:

Tennant said Mansel Simmons was taken to Pullman Regional Hospital, then transported to a Spokane hospital after reportedly receiving a skull fracture and concussion. [...] Tennant said WSU and Idaho football players were kicked out of a party after they began arguing. “About 20” players gathered across the street in a church parking lot, where the alleged assault took place.

For those of you not up on your Pac-12/WAC geography, Pullman and Moscow are just a short drive apart across the Washington-Idaho border, which makes for frequent interactions between the schools’ respective student bodies. Our best wishes to Simmons for a rapid and complete recovery.

Come back soon, Goldilocks From Hell. (AP)

Come back soon, Goldilocks From Hell. (AP)

In our second Viking-headed news bit of the day, ill tidings out of Ann Arbor: linebacker Jake Ryan, Michigan’s leader in sacks and tackles for loss, tore his ACL in practice on Tuesday. Brady Hoke released the following statement through the athletic department on the development:

You always hate when anyone gets injured and unfortunately we’ve dealt with our share of injuries in the last 12 months,” said Michigan coach Brady Hoke. “We will support Jake to make sure he has everything he needs to get through this. I know he will attack his rehabilitation just like he does everything else and will be back when he’s ready.”

It’s a setback you hate to see for any athlete, but the absence of somebody as fun to watch as Ryan will be keenly felt. Our very best wishes to the guy we’ll always remember one MGoBlog denizen calling “Goldilocks from hell.”

A USC Trojans squad aspiring to live up to — and perhaps even surpass — last year’s 7-6 record and Sun Bowl loss will have to make strides without running back Silas Redd, for the time being. The Penn State import, last season’s leading rusher with an average of 75 yards per game, has sustained a torn meniscus and will miss the remainder of spring practice. Redd will undergo surgery on the injured knee on Tuesday; Lane Kiffin expects him to be healed up for preseason practices later this year.

Do we have a theme song in mind for Devin Gardner in 2013? Indeed we do! (AP)

Retroactive good news out of Ann Arbor, where quarterback Devin Gardner has been granted a medical hardship season by the NCAA — for 2010, the year in which he suffered a season-ending back injury. Gardner, the heir apparent to Denard Robinson — although we suppose we can quit referring to Gardner in the future tense, since he started five games at quarterback in 2012 — now has two full seasons of eligibility remaining. Gardner went 3-2 in his stint at the position last season, motoring the Wolverines to wins over Minnesota, Northwestern and Iowa before dropping to Ohio State in the regular-season finale and South Carolina in the Outback Bowl.
