Sole hope for Friday: That Utah’s student section rushes the field, despite the absence of any Ute football players. (AP)

Hawaii and BYU play a single game tonight that makes up the entirety of your Friday college football viewing schedule. We’re sure you have so many questions.

• What information do I, the discerning consumer, need to consume this game? The Cougars and Warriors are scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m. ET in Provo, Utah. The game will be televised on ESPN and streamed on WatchESPN.

• Why am I spending my Friday night watching two teams with a combined record of 3-4 play football? Why did George Mallory dream of scaling Mount Everest?

Andrew Manley threw for 242 yards as NMSU fell to UTEP in last year’s Battle of I-10. Will he exact revenge in ’12? (AP)

Kind of like preseason awards for the upcoming weekend of football, and just as binding. For additional preview content heading into Week 3, please see Andy Staples’ Walkthrough.

Best interstate rivalry game. From Tuesday’s Profiles in Profiteroles, we remind you that the Battle of I-10 passes two trophies back and forth between UTEP and New Mexico State. One is a brass spittoon, the other a shovel found in an abandoned mine. We cannot stress to you enough how thrilled we are that the Battle of I-10 is real. The world is a fine place.

    • Best intrastate rivalry game. Central Florida and Florida International have much in common entering this matchup. Both have designs on their respective conference championships, pretty good chances of getting to the top once league play begins and a recent history of disappointments in nonconference play.

    • Most promising ranked-teams football game. We suspect No. 2 USC will run (well, fly) away from No. 21 Stanford in kind of a hurry. No. 18 Florida vs. No. 23 Tennessee is a rare night kickoff, which sets off all sorts of bad-luck haunting alarms in our head. That leaves No. 20 Notre Dame at No. 10 Michigan State as the only remaining ranked-on-ranked game of Week 3. It also carries the most promise for a compelling, close-fought football product.

  • Barkley and Lee, ad infinitum; more late Week 1 Snap Judgments

    • No. 1 USC 49, Hawaii 10. The first line of the play-by-play report from tonight’s Trojans-Warriors game reads thusly: “15:00 USC Matt Barkley pass to Marqise Lee for 75-yard gain (TD).” Do not adjust your monitors. USC whipped out a 75-yard touchdown on tonight’s first play from scrimmage. Not a bad argument in favor of keeping that top spot in the AP Poll, even if it was just against Hawaii, who helpfully boosted the Trojans’ numbers with three turnovers and six sacks allowed.

Don’t forget our “one data point is worse than no data points” argument from the other night. USC is very good at football; Hawaii not so much. But both courses will correct in one direction or the other before the season winds down. We still know nothin’ bout nothin’. What we do know is that tonight’s fireworks were very entertaining, particularly if you like video games.

Before being retired a few minutes into the fourth quarter, Barkley put up a nice, shiny 50-minute performance: 23-of-38 passing, 372 yards, four touchdowns and no picks. Barkley’s star turn was matched by that of tonight’s favored target, Lee, who wrapped up his home opener with 187 yards on just 10 catches. Robert Woods added two additional touchdown receptions. And did we mention Lee ran back a kick the entire length of the field for a touchdown? That’s an afterthought tonight. That’s how good Lee was.

As for the much worried-about position of USC running back: Curtis McNeal got the starting nod, but Silas Redd led the backs with 55 yards on nine carries and a touchdown. (And a fumble.) Linebacker Hayes Pullard recorded the Trojans’ third touchdown of the first quarter with a 27-yard interception return. [BOX | RECAP]

Hawaii AD Jim Donovan has been placed on leave over a fraudulent Stevie Wonder concert. (AP)

We sometimes feel as though we are in the wrong line of work, but we must admit we had never considered the rapid cash consequences of just straight-up professional hoodwinkings. This sounds even more lucrative than being a bowl tycoon. Hawaii, call us!

(CBS/AP) The University of Hawaii has canceled a Stevie Wonder concert after learning the event wasn’t authorized by the artist or his representatives.

The Aug. 18 show was scheduled to benefit the university’s cash-strapped athletic department, but now officials are trying to recoup the $200,000 paid to local promoter Bob Peyton. [...] UH Athletic Director Jim Donovan says the concert was booked by an unauthorized third party and that Wonder’s representatives had no knowledge of it.

We can’t speculate as to Peyton’s motives, of course, but this sounds like it might be fun to try. Lady Gaga is our sister’s roommate’s friend and will totally play your bachelor/ette parties! Cash only. (The real takeaway here: Hawaii’s AD has been placed on leave over a fraudulent Stevie Wonder concert.)
