The last time we heard of Georgia offensive lineman Kolton Houston, he was the subject of a supremely catty exchange between Bulldogs AD Greg McGarity and Mark Emmert just prior to the 2012 season. Houston, you may recall, took an anabolic steroid in high school while rehabbing a shoulder injury and lost out on playing college ball when traces of the substance remained detectable by drug tests years later. Six months later, his name no longer appears on the UGA football roster. Seth Emerson caught up with Georgia SID Claude Felton for an update on the situation:

“Kolton is currently not working out with the team which is the same as has been the case since his NCAA eligibility has been in question. But his status is the same as last fall. He’s still on scholarship and work still being done to restore his eligibility as has been the case the last 2-3 years.”

We’ve said this before, and we’ll say it again: How dare the NCAA stand in the way of a kid so clearly destined to play football at Georgia. For Schnelly’s sake, his name is Kolton Houston, and he’d be blocking — at least part of the time — for Hutson Mason. You couldn’t script a more perfect Sanford Stadium pairing if you tried.

    • How would he feel about “Bearious” for more formal occasions? If we’re all supposed to be taking after forest creatures for a fresh new look for spring 2013, we would like to be referred to from here on as “Killer Otter.” Thank you for your attention to this matter.

    • And speaking of spring. Army’s spring game, which graced our neck of the woods at Fort Benning last year, continues its freshly-established traveling tradition with a March 8 scrimmage set to take place at Fort Hood, Texas.

    • The Coliseum just needs a place to crash for a few days, until it gets things figured out. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission is behind in its rent, per the L.A. Times, but once it gets its free-range vegan water bottle business up and running things are really going to turn around. It’s not a pyramid scheme. It’s not!

    • That’s a helluva windbreak. Texas Tech approves plans for a “freestanding high-definition video board,” theoretically to be installed and operational in time for the 2013 season.

    • IMPORTANT DEE LINER, D-LINER NEWS. We did promise you at the end of the season that we wouldn’t get mired too deep in recruiting antics, not being super interested in prospects until they actually take the field in August, but exceptions will always be made for defensive ends named Dee Liner. Liner, a five-star prospect from Muscle Shoals who’s ranked by Rivals as the second-best overall recruit at his position, has decommitted from Auburn, citing the loss of his relationships with Gene Chizik and Trooper Taylor. This has been a public service announcement to remind you all that there is a defensive prospect out there named Dee Liner. Thank you.

    • Coach-hirin’ follies! Coordinators snapped up by new schools since we last typed in this here box: Bill Cubit (OC) at Illinois, Josh Conklin (DC) at FIU, David Gibbs (DC) at Houston and — reportedly — Scot Loeffler at Virginia Tech.

    • Roster blotter. Roster moves and non-moves since we last typed in this here box: Notre Dame’s Cierre Wood intends to turn pro; Oklahoma’s Aaron Colvin will return; Houston’s Charles Sims is staying a Cougar for one more year; and Nebraska’s Sean Fisher is forgoing a possible sixth season of eligibility in favor of medical school, the little scamp.

Here we see Dri Archer running away from Buffalo’s defense. This happened a lot on Wednesday night. (AP)

    • Kent State 23, Buffalo 7. It is expected, in major college football, that there will be punches and that those punches need to be rolled with, with all speed. Accidents happen. Injuries crop up. But we can’t really fault Buffalo for dropping a game in which four of its starters got knocked out, particularly when one of those was star running back Branden Oliver. Oliver missed the second half with what was announced as only a “leg injury”; strong safety Issac Baugh, wide receiver Fred Lee and defensive end Steven Means were also out by the end of the evening.

Also not helpful for Buffalo: Kent State running back Dri Archer. The junior edged out teammate Trayion Durham, 127 rushing yards to 112, our favorite being a 57-yard second-quarter scramble that included an ice-cold spin move to break a tackle. [BOX | RECAP]

Daily inspiration. Disappointed in last night’s game? Understandable. But understand that better things lie ahead:

    • Cincinnati 34, Pitt 10.  “We need to play our type of football,” Paul Chryst said in his halftime interview. With respect, we would suggest that Pitt’s current type of football has given up 65 points and scored 27 within the past calendar week, and that the Panthers should perhaps try another kind instead.

Munchie Legaux recorded 322 all-purpose yards and two touchdown passes, both of them tossed to the Downton Abbey-ishly named Ralph David Abernathy IV. George Winn scored two rushing touchdowns for the Bearcats, including a 58-yard run on Cincinnati’s first offensive play. Pitt’s Tino Sunseri was sacked six times and threw a field goal as the clock ran out on the first half that was cruelly ignored on the scoreboard.

It is immensely difficult not to like any football player named Munchie Legaux. (AP)

Pittsburgh and Cincinnati play a single game tonight that makes up the entirety of your Thursday college football viewing schedule. We’re sure you have so many questions.

    • What information do I, the discerning consumer, need to consume this game? The Panthers and Bearcats kick off at 8 p.m. ET in Cincinnati’s Nippert Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN.

    • That is a fun word to say. What, Nippert? Yes! Nippert. Nippert. There is a plucky sensuality about it that I find alluring. The venue is billed as the “fourth-oldest playing site and fifth-oldest stadium in college football.” It also comes with a somber history:

During the season-ending clash with rival Miami (Ohio) in 1923, Jimmy Nippert sustained a spike wound injury and died a month later from blood poisoning. His grandfather, James N. Gamble of Procter and Gamble, provided the funds needed to complete the horseshoe-shaped structure, and the James Gamble Nippert Memorial Stadium was dedicated on Nov. 8, 1924.

    • Wait, seriously, this is it for tonight? On television, if you want to watch major college football, yes.

And now, in matters more directly pertaining to this blog’s mission statement, our reminder to you that Auburn has a commitment from a five-star strongside defensive end named Dee Liner:

Muscle Shoals High School football star and Auburn commit Dee Liner was arrested twice in a span of 10 days, according to a report from WAFF-48 in Muscle Shoals and confirmed by al.com with police.

He is not having a great week.

    But: DEE LINER.

Texas Longhorns faithful are all aflutter over the abrupt decommitment of Ricky Seals-Jones, a top-ranked wide receiver in the 2013 class who wants to chase his football and basketball dreams simultaneously. From Burnt Orange Nation:

Seals-Jones is an athletic freak and likely the top player in the Texas class — which makes him too valuable to simply allow him to walk away because one or both of the football and basketball coaches staffs aren’t willing to accommodate him.

More crucially: His name forms a simple sentence. You just can’t let a guy like that slip away.

  • Jose Jose back on the big-man market

All-Name Team defensive tackle Jose Jose is leaving Central Florida. (US PRESSWIRE)

Two jobs and almost three years ago, an intrepid reader spotted a certain Tennessee commit and wrote in: “Really? Jose Jose?”

To which I replied: “Also, this being Tennessee, there is every chance it’ll end up being pronounced ‘Josie Josie,’ and won’t THAT be a barrel a’squirrels.”

My then-editor chimed in: “I’m just looking forward to seeing the back of his jersey, which will say simply, ‘Jose.’”

Jose went on to decommit from the Vols and sign with Central Florida, where (following an unexpected stop in juco ball) he played in nine games as a sophomore. He now appears to be an available commodity once again after an altercation with his head coach:

Jose and O’Leary apparently exchanged words a few days prior to spring break and the conversation escalated into an argument, although Jose would not say what the two argued about.

That’s Terry Bowden on line 2 for you, Jose.
