Rashaan Evans commits to Alabama over Auburn after Tigers posted his bio on their site

Auburn’s national championship appearance and improbable turnaround under Gus Malzahn has already paid recruiting dividends, with the Tigers holding a strong class entering National Signing Day. However, as of Wednesday morning, one of the program’s top targets remained on the board: Five-star outside linebacker Rashaan Evans, from nearby Auburn (Ala.) High.

Signing Day is full of weird quirks, but the following may take the cake: Before Evans announced his decision, his profile appeared on Auburn’s official site, listing him under the position of “Star.” There was a YouTube video under the Auburn Tigers Athletics account. It’s possible that the school simply jumped the gun — a possibility that CBS’ Jerry Hinnen pointed out — but things became really strange when Evans, stunningly, declared for Alabama.

Evans was down to Auburn, UCLA and Alabama, but the late push by Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide coaching staff snatched the linebacker out of the Tigers’ backyard. It’s fitting, perhaps, that Evans played with Reuben Foster, last year’s five-star linebacker who flipped from Auburn to Alabama after tattooing the Tigers’ logo on his arm.

Not long after Evans’ announcement, his profile was taken down:

As many have mentioned, schools create bio pages for most of their prospects. Otherwise, how would they prepare for the flood of faxes coming in? Still, to have that up there and to watch Evans put on an Alabama hat … oof.

Auburn assistant athletic director of media relations Kirk Sampson provided an official statement on Twitter:

As for Evans, he apparently made the decision last night, but brought a Tigers hat just in case:

The page wasn’t hidden very well — it was out there, and all the hyperlinks were live. There was even the video, which continued to remain online an hour after the announcement. (SB Nation had some fun with it.) It’s possible the web team (which is often a third-party vendor) put the profiles together and pushed them live to save time.

Malzahn and company were still able to pry offensive lineman Braden Smith away from Texas A&M and TCU. Smith can bench press a lot of pounds, and he is also an avid gardener. Most importantly, he is the No. 3 guard prospect in the class 2014.

The Smith news was met with lots of fist-pumping and high-fives, even if it ultimately won’t take away the sting of the Evans announcement that happened just minutes later.

Only somebody that doesn't pay attention to college football would say that Nick Saban is an idiot and that he don't know how to coach. Remarkably crazy comment.

Too bad the talent couldnt be spread out evenly amongst the top programs , then guys like Saban would have to actually coach...  and Nick would be expose for the idiot he is... The Auburn game was not just a brain freeze on Nick's part.

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler Yeah, coaching has nothing to do with it. Those players magically develop and coaching has nothing to do with the Tide annihilating people in national championship games. Absolutely. You're right. You're a coaching God. By the way, how many rings and crystal balls do you have? Oh..you don't coach? Have never played? Oh..I see. Thank you for your enlightened commentary.

@friendly--neighborhood--scrawler You are the only idiot. What a fool you just made of yourself? #Bama  attracts top talent because of tradition of program and coaching which puts them in the NFL. You must be an Obama boot licker. Lets socialize football you say. Wow

@JamesTeasdale  The joke of a team that beat you and just played for a national title and has a top 10 recruiting class? Sometimes fans are just illogical.

@mashley278 @friendly--neighborhood--scrawler  Are you saying that being a sour SI.com commenter doesn't make you an authority on who is the best coach....?  It couldn't possibly be the athletic departments who spend millions and millions of dollars doing their due diligence...  I just thought it took some bitterness and anger to make that kind of judgement.

@scott_mccollum

bama's name alone brings in these players... you are telling me the best players in the country cannot win games with a brain dead coach drooling out the side of his mouth....

sometimes i wonder why Saban and people like him even buy toilet paper with guys like @scott_mccollum...around ready to do the job for them...

@JoeCabot  Do you mean like our public schools, highways, military,National Parks,Police and Fire protection etc....? Your reactionary drivel is just that,no matter where it is uttered....

@thatmanstu @JoeCabot  Yes... public schools are just doing great these days.  And just because a government taxes and spends on an item like national parks, military and so on, does not make it a program based in socialist principles.  There were public roads and fire protection long before people came up with the defined concept of socialism.
