Things got heated at the end of defensive end Malik McDowell’s recruitment, but the Southfield, Mich., prospect has officially made his choice. The No. 1 player in Michigan will be headed to Michigan State.

McDowell made his choice right around 9:30 a.m. ET, picking the Spartans over Michigan, Florida State and Ohio State. Typically coaches give a late push, but in this instance, McDowell’s parents were the ones throwing a late charge into some negative recruiting

From the Detroit Free-Press:

“We don’t want him at MSU,” Malik’s mother, Joya Crowe, said Monday night, and she gave multiple reasons.

“Something happened, I don’t want to put it out there what it was,” she said of her son’s recent official visit, “but I had a bad experience at MSU.”

Ultimately McDowell went with the team he thought was best, and that was the Big Ten and Rose Bowl winners. McDowell is ranked 26th in the class, and is the number two defensive end in the nation, according to Rivals. He’s a monster pickup for the Spartans. who had arguably the best defense in the country last year. Grabbing a five-star defensive end is always a good thing.

The gap between Michigan State and the Wolverines was always pretty sizable. But after the season the Spartans had in 2013, and the way Michigan continues to slide, the situation has been reversed. Michigan State is the top dog now.

[UPDATE 12:30 p.m. ET] McDowell’s future in East Lansing might not be a done deal yet, according to’s Mike Farrell.

Putting the pieces together, FSU must have been so sure of their prized prospect they went and asked a lessor recruit from Jacksonville to step aside and greyshirt so they could make room for McDowell.

Happens everywhere you say but this recruit had committed to the Noles before spring and never waffled on it. It pissed the high school coach and parents off so much the kid dropped FSU 5-days before signing and is now with South Carolina ... and FSU never got McDowell. smh

The high school coach is now bad-mouthing FSU saying he'll remember this in the future.

Hate seeing that played out like that. It's called over-signing and all the big time schools do it. I keep hearing Alabama is the worst at it. Maybe that is one reason they keep getting the coveted #1 recruiting ranking every year?

Not to say kids don't automatically want to play at Alabama but there is a strategy to this part of college football as well and when it gets down to the wire and five new 5-stars appear on everyone's radar, if you''re full go ask some earlier recruits to greyshirt and go after the 5-star recruits.

I hear Alabama just does it without asking. At least FSU was honest and upfront about it with the parents and kid telling them exactly what they were wanting to do and why. What some kids, coaches, and parents apparently don't understand is it is a business and greyshirting is the ugly side of that business when it happens.

Just a thought, if the recruit hadn't raised such a stink I wonder where he'd be playing?

@Truth_Is_Freedom  Wow I never heard of this what exactly is grey shirting? I get is similar to redshirting but worse.. Not being sarcastic.
