Texas commit: Mack Brown told me to ‘look around’
On the weekend that Mack Brown announced his resignation from Texas, the coach reportedly told at least one Longhorns commit to “look around” before signing with the program.
John Bonney, a three-star safety from Houston’s Lamar High, told Houston TV station KTRK that Brown offered the advice to him and a handful of other recruits on an official visit to Texas.
“I was at my official visit when Mack Brown resigned, and he told us to go look around. [He said] he’ll even talk to other coaches for you and everything because he really just wanted the best for us as players.”
The Longhorns hired former Louisville coach Charlie Strong last month to replace Brown, who announced his resignation in December after 16 seasons. Bonney told KTRK that he remains committed to Texas despite making visits to Auburn and Baylor. Strong’s current 21-member class ranks 14th in the country, according to Rivals.com
Brown is set to remain on payroll at Texas as a special adviser through 2020.
