Auburn’s Gus Malzahn: Iron Bowl trophy ‘going to be around here for a while’
The play of the 2013 college football season was undoubtedly Auburn’s miraculous “Kick-Six” — a return of a missed field goal for a touchdown — that gave the fourth-ranked Tigers a 34-28 win over No. 1 Alabama in the Iron Bowl. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn says that War Eagle fans should get used to beating Bama.
At halftime of Wednesday night’s SEC basketball game between the Tigers and — who else? — the Crimson Tide, Auburn honored Malzahn and his team for their 12-2 season, an impressive finish considering that the program failed to win an SEC game in 2012. The Tigers were presented with the Foy-ODK Sportsmanship Trophy, which is awarded annually to the winner of the Iron Bowl.
Malzahn thanked fans for their support this season and offered a guarantee.
“You helped us win a lot of games until the end. Obviously the Iron Bowl was big, and I’m here to tell you, this trophy is going to be around here for a while. War Eagle!”
Auburn later topped Alabama in hoops, 74-55.
