Report: Michigan State commit body slams school security guard

Michigan State Spartans, Recruiting

(video via Deadspin)

A Michigan State football commit body-slammed a security guard at his high school on Wednesday, police told Detroit’s WXYZ Channel 7 News.

A cell phone video allegedly shows Jayru Campbell, a quarterback at Detroit’s Cass Technical High and a verbal commitment in the Spartans’ 2015 recruiting class, body-slamming a school security guard to the ground in a hallway. According to the report, Cass Tech football coach Thomas Wilcher confirmed that Jayru did “get into trouble at school [on Wednesday],” but the coach declined to elaborate.

Campbell is already suspended for the beginning of the Technicians’ 2014 season for punching an opposing player in the handshake line after his school’s state semifinal playoff loss last fall. The 6-foot-3, 187-pound rising senior is the ninth-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2015, according to Rivals.com, and led Cass Tech to state titles as both a freshman and a sophomore.

He will fit right in with Dantonio - he's the only coach I know that would pick up a kid from jail and put them on the team bus to the airport for that week's game...

He has lots of class (all of it very low).  He'll go far in life.  What a complete tool.

MSU should run from this kid as fast as possible. Sounds like he'll be nothing but trouble. Hope the kid gets his anger management under control.

TALK ABOUT A RYAN LEAF JR!! MICHIGAN ST BETTER BODY SLAM HIS SCHOLARSHIP OR THEY WILL NEVER LIVE IT DOWN ALWAYS BAD PUBLICITY...HE IS A JR COLLEGE PLAYER WHO WILL GET AN AGGRAVATED ASSAULT CHARGE LATER KICKED OUT AND END UP DOING A 3-5 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE BEFORE HE BEGINS A CRACK CAREER...SOUNDS LIKE WE'VE HEARD THIS STORY WAY TOO OFTEN ABOUT THESE CRAP SHOOTS!

Even worse, Cass Tech is supposed to have the cream of the crop of high school students in Detroit.  Apparently this athlete does not fit in to that category except on the football field.  All you MSU assistant coaches better watch out!  Criticize this diva and you may get a pile driver.

If MSU allows him to accept a scholarship I will lose all respect.  There is no way this kind of attitude is going to improve in the future.  There needs to be a message sent to all these "ranked" high school athletes that if you can't play be the rules in high school, don't expect to get a shot in college.

@floorme1955 Why?  If they do, several other top 25 schools will be lining up to offer him a scholarship.  Rules don't apply to tools like jayroo, apparently.

@Cool:  Agreed.  Part of the problem with the entire system is that a lot of these athletes have been coddled and put on a pedestal since they were kids, once they showed some kind of athletic talent.  Then they go through high school with special treatment (which happens - it happened at my school with the star players and we weren't even very good) and start to feel that rules don't apply to them.

Nothing good can come from glossing over this kind of behavior.

@JerryCummings @FOOLKILLER You know that Dantonio has been known to pick his players up from jail and put them directly on the team bus for that week's game, don't you?
