Georgia will have a BCS champion defensive coordinator roaming its sidelines next season. Florida State coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, fresh off a win over Auburn in the BCS Championship Game, will be Georgia’s new defensive coordinator, the school announced on Tuesday.

The news was first reported by Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Towers reported that Pruitt met with Bulldogs coach Mark Richt in Athens on Tuesday. Pruitt replaces Todd Grantham, who left earlier this week to take over the defense under Bobby Petrino at Louisville. In a statement, Richt simply said, “I’m ecstatic.”

Pruitt, meanwhile, said he is excited to join the Bulldogs.

“This is an outstanding professional and personal opportunity,” said Pruitt. “I’m looking forward to meeting the current players and getting on the road to visit with recruits.”

Pruitt helped the Seminoles finish the season with the country’s No. 3 total defense (281.4 yards allowed per game) and No. 1 scoring defense (12.1 points allowed per game). In Florida State’s 34-31 BCS title win over Auburn on Jan. 6, the Seminoles held the No. 1 rushing offense in the country to 232 rushing yards on the ground. Auburn averaged more than 320 rushing yards per game this season.

Pruitt has SEC experience, having spent three seasons on Nick Saban’s staff at Alabama prior to joining Jimbo Fisher and the Seminoles. According to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, Pruitt will be paid $850,000 annually at Georgia. That’s a hefty raise from the coach’s salary during his only season in Tallahassee.

The Bulldogs finished eighth in the SEC in total defense (375.5 yards per game) and 10th in scoring defense (29 points per game) in 2013.

nomobo: There's a simple solution to your complaints about FSU's schedule - let them in the SEC.  Stand up to Florida and say we want FSU in the conference, regardless of whether you think we should have them.  Until then, stop complaining about their weak ACC schedule.  As an aside, their OOC schedule next year includes Oklahoma State, Notre Dame, and Florida.

The rest of you: if you want to know why Pruitt left FSU, Google Rick Ballou Pruitt.  You'll have your answer - and it ain't money!  Good luck with that, Dawg fans.

UGA can now comfortably transition from the SEC to the ACC. Yeah, yeah, FSU won the NC by beating a 3rd-rate SEC team that got to the BCS on the basis of 2 fluke plays and FSU got there on the basis of a 1-game schedule (Clemson) unless you count the perennial powerhouse Duke. At least 4 other SEC teams could have ground FSU into paste.

Jeremy Pruitt made $260K at Alabama in 2012, $540K at FSU in 2013 and is expected to make $850K at Georgia in 2014.

@FisherofMen80 @nomobo i think their more traditional style of play would be easier for SEC teams to match up against.

How could that happen? FSU would have to ditch the likes of Bethune-Cookman, Nevada, or someone from their rock-hard ACC schedule.

@yehonala04 @nomobo Don't sweat him, yehonala04.  She's just whining on the way out the door to irrelevance.  She's either a gaturd or a Bama trailer resident.

@nomobo Your school  is ? No SEC school other than Florida who have no choice schedule FSU home and home  . Alabama in 2007 at Jax a 21-14 Nole win . None of the rest of the SEC has played   FSU since 1990  in the regular season. Have your school contact them @seminoles.com.
