LSU’s backfield will have a new look for the 2014 season. Tigers running back Jeremy Hill announced on Twitter that he will forgo his redshirt junior season and enter the NFL draft.

Hill paced LSU with 1,401 rushing yards in just 11 games due to a suspension for the season-opener against TCU. He also missed the first quarter of the Tigers’ second game against UAB. Hill’s yardage marked the second-best single season production by an LSU running back.

Sources told USA Today on Sunday that Hill would return to LSU for his redshirt junior season, but the running back’s declaration on social media notes an apparent change of heart.

Hill thanked LSU fans before announcing his decision on Monday.

The 6-foot-2, 235-pound back has been connected to legal trouble during his college career. His suspension this season stemmed from an April arrest for which Hill and another male allegedly punched a man on the side of the head outside of a bar. A cell phone camera captured the incident, and LSU coach Les Miles suspended Hill indefinitely afterwards. He pled guilty to simple battery in July.

Hill was already on probation for a 2011 incident in which he’d been arrested following an alleged sexual assault on a 14-year-old girl; he pled guilty to a misdemeanor and delayed his enrollment at LSU until 2012.

Hill’s departure from LSU won’t damage the Tigers too badly, as the program has some new talent coming to Baton Rouge this fall. The nation’s No. 1 high school tailback, Leonard Fournette of New Orleans’ St. Augustine High, announced his intentions to sign with the Tigers on Jan. 2. Fournette is the No. 3 overall recruit in the country, according to Rivals.com.
