Report: Bobby Petrino hiring at Louisville ‘imminent’

It appears as though Louisville has found a familiar face to replace departed coach Charlie Strong. According to Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports, the Cardinals are expected to hire Western Kentucky’s Bobby Petrino, who was the coach at Louisville from 2003 through ’06.

Multiple sources told Forde that Petrino’s hiring is “imminent.” ESPN’s Joe Schad reports that Petrino has been offered the job and is expected to accept the position.

Petrino, who just wrapped his first season as the Hilltoppers’ coach, went 41-9 with the Cardinals. Among his wins was the program’s first-ever BCS bowl victory, a 24-13 defeat of Wake Forest in the ’07 Orange Bowl.

Despite his success, Petrino’s reputation began to sour in Louisville. He interviewed for several other jobs — including positions at Auburn and LSU — while simultaneously professing his loyalty to the Cardinals. He then left for the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons in 2006 after he had signed an extension with Louisville.

He coached the Falcons for all of 13 games in 2007 before hastily departing to take over at Arkansas in advance of the ’08 season. Petrino went 34-17 with the Razorbacks, but was fired in ’12 after it was revealed he had hired his mistress, Jessica Dorrell, for a position within the football program. The news only surfaced after Petrino and Dorrell were involved in a motorcycle accident.

Strong left Louisville to take over as the coach at Texas.

Lane Kiffin to Bama? Petrino back to Louisville? Man, I sure hope my Gators hire Aaron Hernandez as a line coach once he's out of prison!

Tom Jurich goes to the kitchen, opens the refrigerator and pours himself a glass of milk.  He takes a drink of the milk, spits it out as it has gone sour.  He cleans up the spilled milk and then places the milk carton back in the refrigerator, thinking to himself, "Maybe the milk won't be sour tomorrow."

These schools act like quality coaches are impossible to find. There are hundreds of guys around the country coaching in FCS & Div II or FBS coordinators who are capable if given the opportunity. Why recycle a guy, while a good coach, has proven to be completely classless? Cheats on his wife, improperly hires his mistress, lies to the school about the accident, quits on the Falcons & cowardly leaves a note for his players.  This makes Louisville look foolish.

Great hire! Love stories about redemption. Excellent!!!

Ok., I really can't wait to read all the judgmental moralists who lead utterly perfect lives ranting about it, too! They're hilarious.

This is practically a no-brainer; you get a really good coach (probably at a MAJOR discount), hope that buyout is expensive since da Ville already knows Petrino doesn't keep his word.

...and they're hiring him why? This is the example you want in front of your young students?

Great hire in Petrino. Quality coach just an inferior man as a person.

Auburn will fly to KY get him next year..........

Why would anyone sign this liar?  He left for the Falcons after signing an extension with Louisville.  Then he left DURING the season from the Falcons without having the guts to personally inform his players to go to Arkansas.  Then there is the whole incident at Arkansas with the bike accident and the hiring of the same girl over qualified candidates.

Wonder if he's riding his bike to Louisville to sign the contract? Betcha he will have a passenger?

Looking from the west coast, it looks to me like Louisville just won the lottery.  Yes Petrino had baggage when he left.  But when he was at Louisville they were always a fantastic team - and unlike the recent couple years under Strong, the teams under Petrino were not dependent on just one player (Bridgewater).  If I was a Louisville fan I would be singing "thank you thank you Texas".

again these coaches do great at louisville but then when they leave fall on hard times john l. smith coached there, was good there, left for bigger pastures and provided to great sound bites "The coaches are screwing it up" and "Do i look stupid" his current postion head coach of the fort lewis hawks, petrino great at louisville, then slinks out of atlanta by note

I love the hire.  Strong is overrated as a coach...he's good, but it stops there.  Petrino is a great coach.  He is looking for redemption and got his second chance.   Watch out for Louisville.  They will be a beast.

I don't see the problem with this, especially on Louisville's end. Petrino jumped ship before (twice), faced an embarrassing scandal, and has quietly worked to resurrect his career. How far he has gotten, we don't know, but it should be of no surprise that he didn't last at WKU for more than a season--the college football world and WKU knew this. I think both Petrino and Louisville know this is his last shot. He probably won't get the opportunity to jump ship again and if he faces some type of embarrassing scandal I'm guessing Louisville is putting an out clause in his contract. If it works, it'll look like a good hire. If it doesn't, Louisville will move on and I really don't foresee Petrino getting another shot at a big time (or mid-major/non-qualifier) job.

Why anyone would hire this known liar, quitter and "all-about-me" jerk is beyond my comprehension.

what are the chances that a university has two coaches in the major sports that have have such similar public scandals on their resume?

You got your 2nd chance Bobby. Now stay put. I expect this guy to coach L'Ville for the remainder of his career, if the W's are there.

That's all you need to know about this liar......even with his motorcycle lies.  Good luck parents having your kid with this guy

I did not think he would be gone from a major program for long. These schools just want to win, period. He will win.

I think this is a very poor choice. Petrino may get through next season without incident, but I predict another debacle sometime in 2015. He is incapable of honorable behavior. It will flush him out soon enough.

@fsutoby If he can stay clean and sticks around, Petrino gives the ACC a consistent winner in football. That would be good.

this makes perfect sense.  it is a good job and he will never be looked at for anything higher.  as for louisville, they sign a guy who cannot jump ship and has been a proven winner for them.

@SInow Petrino may be qualified in terms of football, but he's the farthest thing from a role model for impressionable student athletes

I hope all the hot 20-something blonde grad students go into hiding pronto!  Make sure Bobby doesn't ride anything with two wheels either.  Bad enough he has to ride women less than half his age.

Bet anyone dollars to donuts this will never happen.  Any takers?  The guy is incredibly tainted.  But then again, LV does have Rick "15 second" Pitino.  I could be wrong.  But probably not.

What a creep.  That will cement Louisville as the worst possible member of the ACC.

Please list all your sins, failures and transgressions so we can read them and then decide if we think you are worthy to remain gainfully employed. Nope, I didn't think you would...

Lohikaarme

Yep, if they don't like Petrino why they are not asking to fire 15 seconds Pitino.

What redemption? Desperate school hires former coach. Dude ran around on his spouse with a young girl, engaged to another man. He's s faithful as an alley tomcat. I can judge all day if I want. Welcome to America, borningindetroit.

They already have Pitino who is pretty much at the same moral level.

@Richard--Ramirez As an alum and fan, I only want him if he is winning. Plus, joining the ACC gives him what we couldn't last time, a shot at a title..."Just Win Baby"

cjrunandjump
cjrunandjump

@Rickapolis Last time, he left for money..which we didn't have. We have some of that now.  He really didn't lie to us at Louisville, he won some hardware and left, but he lied to the Falcon fans..and he only got fired from Arkansas because of his affair. This is great for us, plus our new conference alignment can get us national title attention, unlike the Big East and AAC...we don't need a 20 year coach, when the game changes every 4 years...just win.

@KevinM_Mielke @SInow I would let my son play for him. I just wouldn't let my daughter attend Louisville while he's the coach... :)

Unicornhunter

@KevinM_Mielke @SInow Since most of his players will be on scholarship, of age, and not dependent on their parents, the whole idea of whether a parent would send a kid there is overblown.

@bportnoy @SInow Those impressionable student athletes probably corrupted Petrino to begin with!

@FCSFootball+1 Until the ACC loves the fact that our baseball team has made CWS two years running, our WBB has made tourney and final 4 twice within the past 3 years, our MBB is going for 3rd final 4 in row, our swimming team is ranked in top 10 past 3 years, and our football is consistently winning bowl games...worst possible member my A$$..get your facts straight and understand why they added us. We are the best run sports program in the country..hands down..not FSU, Duke, or anyone else..so until that changes, respect us!

jimnie

@Rickapolis@jimnieYou win - send me an address and I'll send money for donuts. I can't believe the AD at LV is this desperate, but oh well, stranger things have happened.
