Who should be the next Texas coach? Vote in the second round of SI.com’s bracket

Following Mack Brown’s resignation last weekend, Texas has formed an eight-person committee to locate its next head coach. But in case you missed it, SI.com has come up with a vastly superior method: a 32-coach, winner-take-all bracket. After all, why limit input to eight people when the entirety of the Internet could weigh in? When it comes to opinions, more is always better.

Second-round voting begins now and will conclude on Monday, Dec. 23 at noon ET. The complete results from the first round are listed below the polls for the latest matchups.

So who will be the (completely and totally hypothetical) next Longhorns coach? Help decide.

(*Note: This bracket has absolutely no input on Texas’ actual hiring decision. Well, at least none of which we’re aware.)

Made up coaching choices being voted on by people that have no background on UT football, how scientific.

And…this "game" leads to a pot of gold, I presume?

This is about as far fetched as the premise of Lost on TV.

Why, pray tell, would Carroll or Harbaugh lead up-and-coming NFL teams with young QBs…to live in Texas?

Bobby Petrino is who they should hire.

i'd vote but there isn't a "none of the above" listed.

I got every one right! What do I win?

Also, there should have been an entry for "this was a really interesting story, but it's really starting to lose steam and I'm sick of hearing about it four months on."

Kinda silly to include Chip Kelly since he still has a year ban left in college football from the penalties imposed when he left Oregon.

Half these coaches have said they aren't leaving their Teams/Schools! And saban, peterson are mora all just signed new deals/extensions with their teams!

Kinda dumb but whatever, TEXAS should REALIZE my EAGLES H.C. CHIP KELLEY Will Not Be Leaving since he's 1 of the FEW NFL Head Coaches with ZERO NFL Experience but PHILLY is Thriving & I WANT TO C GRUDEN back Coaching but if he comes back it'll be to a REAL Team in the NFL instead of #2 Tier Big 12 Team.

GUY WHO DESERVE AN SHOULD GET THE JOB- 3

JAMES FRANKLIN- Look what he did with VANDY in the MUCH TOUGHER SEC an he's a Hound on the Recruitment Trail who Gets EVERYTHING out of his Players so Imagine what he'd do with TEXAS Talent.

CHARLIE STRONG- He had a GREAT Run with TEDDY B an LOUISVILLE but it's time to Move on, if TEXAS A&M an VANDY is Fine with a Black Head Coach then TEXAS should. Plus he's also a GREAT RECRUITER an would OPEN UP THAT FLORIDA PIPELINE Talent plus whatever's in KENTUCKY.

MIKE GUNDY- He'd be Smart Jumping ship now before the NCAA brings down the Thunder at OSU, He KNOWS the BIG 12,  Has been Recruiting the whole TEXAS, OKLAHOMA BIG 12 Area for awhile now so it's not like he's new to the Recruitment Game in Texas & just look how he turned HOMA ST. into a a Scoring Beast of a Program. Something that the Long Horns haven't been in awhile.

The best coach for a medium term fix at Texas (not long term because of his age, 60) is not even among your 32 coach bracket. Mike Riley of Oregon State would turn Texas into a top five team faster than a fly sweep. That said, I want him to stay at OSU to keep the Pac 12 strong.

Are you all joking me... Charlie Strong beats out Mack Brown????   The injustice... the rigging.. the ummm... well I will have to think about other adjectives to describe my disgust at this terrible turn of events.

So, I take it that a preponderance of people voting in this second round believe that James Franklin is a better coach than Nick Saban??  On what do you base that belief?  Maybe your voting that way because you think that Saban is not available and you like Franklin for the job.  That makes sense, sort of.  There was no instructions like that, however.  Saban should win this, hands down.  Otherwise it's a sham.

@drudown Austin is an incredible town and far different from what you think of when you think of Texas.  Dream job, destination job.

@SmoovP I totally agree.  It's stupid that he's not on this poll.  I think the only reason people aren't considering him is because of the scandalous ending he had at Arkansas.  I think he learned and they should hire him.

MarkDuginski

@WilliamBrady Idk if that's a good idea he just went 4-8 at Florida this season and lost to FCS Georgia Southern who is 8-4 on that lower D1 level.

@MikeSchultz Franklin can only beat teams with losing records. The average record of the teams he has defeated while at Vanderbilt is 4-8.

MikeSchultz

Also forgot about ART BRILES he's another guy that'd be able to slide right in, Resume...What he did at BAYLOR an that's enough said.

nyhoukcdal

@Cool Since Mack just stepped down, why is he even in this poll to begin with?  He is the 1 coach in the entire world that will NOT be the next coach at UT.  (Unless there is another Mack Brown out there that I am unfamiliar with.)

nyhoukcdal
nyhoukcdal

@BobRayTalbot There were no instructions whatsoever, other than to put yourself in the place of the committee and land a coach.  Everyone is free to weigh whatever factors they choose.

mountainbrook417
mountainbrook417

@BobRayTalbot  Its obviously the fact that the average record of the teams that Franklin has beaten in the last 3 years was 4-8  and 10 of the 23 Vandy victories came against teams with 3 wins or less. High powered stuff!

MatHill1
MatHill1

@BobRayTalbot No, it's based on likelihood of said coach taking the job, not whether for not he is a better coach.

nyhoukcdal
nyhoukcdal

@MikeSchultz I don't get the Briles speculation.  Why would he want to leave BU right now?  As for Gundy, yep, get out before the hammer falls.

Ryan19

@nyhoukcdal @Cool I think Todd Graham is another coach in the who will not be the next coach at UT.  When Steve Patterson left ASU to be AD at Texas it was set up so that he could not hire any coach from ASU.
