Apparently, there’s no greater cause-and-effect scenario than being tossed into the rumor mill as the possible next coach at Texas and suddenly receiving a lot more money. First, it happened to Auburn’s Gus Malzahn, who landed a six-year, $26.85 million extension earlier this week. Now, Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher has reportedly hit the jackpot. While Fisher’s top-ranked Seminoles were playing Duke in the ACC title game, The Palm Beach Post‘s Tom D’Angelo reported that Fisher had agreed to a contract extension that would net him an average of $4.1 million per season for about “five to seven years.”

From D’Angelo:

Fisher’s original head coaching contract was for five-years and a base salary of $1.8 million. He then signed his current a five-year, $13.75 million contract in January 2011 after going 10-4 in 2010, his first as head coach. That contract was extended by one year but without a raise through the 2016 season following the 2011 season.

The university had discussions with Fisher about an extension and raise following last year, but university president Eric Barron decided against it.

Rumors surfaced earlier this season that Fisher and the school administration didn’t exactly see eye-to-eye. But winning is a cure-all. This season’s success — coupled with the possibility (however slim) of losing the coach to another program — prompted Florida State to make Fisher one of the top-10 highest-paid coaches in the nation.
