Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel on Washington rumors: ‘I’m going to stay’

The Washington job is open, and as he’s a former Huskies assistant under Don James, it was only natural Gary Pinkel’s name would get mentioned. The Missouri coach spent 11 seasons in Seattle before taking the Toledo job in 1991, and he has always had nice things to say about the university and especially James.

That said, Pinkel has seemed happy at Missouri and has the Tigers playing for the SEC championship on Saturday. He didn’t have to address the rumors, but he must have thought it prudent to stop the talk at the source, putting to rest any doubts he’ll stay in Columbia on ESPN Radio’s Mike & Mike on Thursday.

Via CoachingSearch.com, which transcribed Pinkel’s comments:

“That’s because I coached there for 12 years and Don James is my mentor and all those things,” Pinkel said about his name being out there. “I’ll be quite frank, I’m staying at the University of Missouri.

“I, with the administration’s help, can continue to build a national program and a quest for national championships. I’m a Missouri Tiger, and I’m going to stay a Missouri Tiger.”

Pinkel is 101-62 at Missouri, and the Tigers are 11-1 this season with the lone loss coming in the second overtime against South Carolina thanks in part to one of the more memorable missed field goals this year.

Missouri is a better job than the Washington. Better recruiting base. Better conference the Sec. better basketball.  Washington is on the rear end of America with little national coverage.  Plus it rains every day in Seattle.

Smart man.  Why would any coach that is competitive want to leave the SEC for the PAC-12????

Pinkel wouldn't get hired by most schools after his DUI.....Only Mizzery keeps that kind of company.

@Blinker Oh I don't know, to be in a beautiful city, a new stadium, better pay (maybe), more prestiguos school (although I know MO is a good school) similar winning tradition (UW 33 bowl appearances, MO 29), to be on the west coast.  So even though it's moot at this point, there are a few reasons why the job is attractive, even to an SEC coach.

@muser This guy is a "Beaker" (Jayhawk). The only thing they love more than KU Basketball is hating everything Missouri. I know, I live in Lawrence. It's pretty pathetic to continue the bitter hate that "Beakers" have for Mizzou, after they have left the conference.

I know, I know.......it runs deeper than that. Some ya-hoo's from Missouri burned Lawrence to the ground 150 years ago. Well most of  my "Beaker Buddies" drive BMW's, Porsche's, and Lexus', no resentment over WWII? Dude 150 years is a long time to hold on to a resentment!

Besides, I detect a little jealousy over Mizzou's success. After a season which Mark Mangino had KU playing way over the potential, its been downhilll for them.  Turner Giil, now Charlie Weiss. Yikes, I'd be  PO'ed too. Maybe they should hire a more fit coach, huh?
