Kevin Sumlin has agreed to a new six-year contract to remain the head coach at Texas A&M, Aggies’ athletic director Eric Hyman announced on Saturday.

The news was first reported by Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com. Terms of the deal are still pending.

Hyman said Sumlin’s contract represents a true commitment by the university.

“Coach Sumlin has demonstrated why he is considered among the nation’s elite football coaches. His coaching and recruiting abilities are only secondary to his integrity, class and passion for his student-athletes and this University,” Hyman said. “Texas A&M is making a sincere commitment to Kevin. We are fortunate that he is committed to remain an Aggie for a long time to come, and we are excited about what the future has in store.”

Sumlin, who is finishing his second season with the Aggies, had been mentioned as a possible replacement for Lane Kiffin at USC since Kiffin’s abrupt ouster in September. The Trojans had reportedly made Sumlin their top target in the school’s upcoming coaching search.

In a statement, Sumlin said his new contract is the next step in the development of Texas A&M’s football program.

“I am humbled and very appreciative of the commitment that Texas A&M has extended not only to me and my family, but to our football program overall.” Sumlin said. “We have only just begun to lay the foundation for sustained, long-term success here at Texas A&M, and we will work hard every day to make this great institution and the 12th Man proud.”

Sumlin is 19-5 as Texas A&M’s head coach, including an 11-win campaign in 2012, the program’s debut season in the SEC. Prior to arriving in College Station, Sumlin led Houston to a school-record 12 wins and its highest finish in the BCS rankings in ’11.

Ha! This guy is chuckling and rubbing his palms together all the way to the bank.  He hasn't done anything! He's in his second year and has not done any better than third in his division either year.  Aggies just have a mentality of reaction instead of deliberation.  They were so afraid that USC or some other school was going to come take their coach away from them, they had to act now even if it was completely irrational to do so.  If the guy wants to go somewhere else, he isn't the right guy for you anyway. Let him go.  It is amazing to watch.

Congrats to Coach Sumlin and the 12th man.  Not only will we have a top coach, but work has already started on the renovation / addition of Kyle Field to make it the largest stadium in the SEC.

I'll agree that Johnny Manziel carried the rest of the team on his back all season long.  He never once complained of the pain he was enduring during the final weeks of the season, which some believe is a broken thumb or torn ligament or tendon.  (Swelling generally doesn't last three to four weeks),  The other point is Johnny didn't play defense, there were 17 true Freshmen in two deep (22) depth chart and they will get better.   So it boiled down to put points on the board or loose.

His Heisman repeat has disappeared, his NFL draft stock has dropped to second round at best and his family has boat loads of money, so don't be surprised if Johnny Manziel returns for another year at A&M

Although there is still the PGA tour, since he is a scratch golfer...

I wish I could get a raise for being a failure at my last 2 projects/games.

The guy inherited Keenum @ UH and Manziel @ ATM. Why exactly is he held in such high regard?

Dear A&M profs: Now you know why you won't be getting a raise for the next five years.

Anyone else see the similarities between Sumlin and Gene Chizik? Take over a team with a freak athlete at QB, put the ball in his hands, take credit for the wins, and then sucker the school into a big long term contract.........  Without JM, A&M would have been lucky to have gone 500 the past two years.   I would have waited to see how the team fares next year without JM.  Sumlin may be the best coach in college football, but he hasn't had to prove it with JM as his QB.

I have no idea why Sumlin is considered to be such a great coach.  When I think of a good coach I think of someone who has a balanced approach and his teams are well balanced.  If it were not for Johnny football is there any doubt his wins would be cut in half?  Sumlin appears to think offense wins games and doesn't give a flip about defense.

That's a relief. Sumlin is wildly overrated. I'm glad this takes him out of consideration for the USC gig.

@historiskull  They always lose in November. That hasn't keep the good ol boys from voting them in to the title game in the past.

@Suteki73 Um...no because Chizik sucked at his last school and Sumlin was great at Houston. Poor comparison, makes me wonder if you even watch College Football

@villepeople That's one FEWER option for USC.  Try to avoid poor grammar.

@MrGameandShow - Sumlin inherited Case Keenum and co. from Art Briles at UH. He has never built a winning team. Yes, in this case, it does matter. I guess you are the one tat doesn't watch much college football.
