Fresno State can kiss its BCS hopes goodbye.

The Bulldogs couldn’t survive a shootout with quarterback David Fales and Mountain West rival San Jose State as the Spartans upended No. 16 Fresno State 62-52. The loss likely spoils any hopes the Bulldogs had of crashing a BCS bowl.

Much of Friday’s conference clash was a battle between Fales and Fresno State quarterback Derek Carr. Both prolific passers combined for more than 800 yards and 12 touchdowns in the first half of an offensively dominated contest. Carr finished 38-of-50 for 519 yards, six scores and one interception while Fales capped the day 37-of-45 for 547 yards and six touchdowns. It was Fales’ first 500-yard passing game of his career as both teams combined for 1,382 yards of offense and 63 first downs.

Despite the high-octane offense in the first half, both attacks slowed down in the second half. Fresno State managed only a field goal until Josh Quezada’s two-yard touchdown run with two minutes to play. Meanwhile San Jose State added 20 more points to keep the Bulldogs at bay, and the Spartans’ defense stuffed Carr in the second half. In all Fresno State simply couldn’t keep San Jose State off the field. The Spartans held a remarkable advantage on time of possession, holding the ball for 39:23 while the Bulldogs enjoyed only 20:37 of offense.

Now it seems Northern Illinois of the MAC stands as the non-AQ program with the best shot at a BCS berth. The Huskies were the highest-ranked non-AQ team in last week’s BCS rankings at No. 14. With Fresno State out of the picture, Northern Illinois has no true test from any other non-AQ program for a BCS bowl berth. If the Huskies remain ahead of 17th-ranked UCF of the American Athletic Conference, we could be looking at NIU in the BCS for the second straight year.

Why do we have to have a 2nd tier team like this even in the BCS talk when they can't compete with the top 8 in the BCS? northern illinois will get wiped whoever they play unless the opponent doesn't give a ratts azz about plying them.

I would like to see a rematch with Florida State for NIU. NIU has beefed up its defensive backfield speed and Jordan Lynch has another year's experience under his undefeated belt.

Great job playing yourself to a bowl game, but it's not going to pay as much as your share of the BCS money you cost every other team in your conference.  Better do some good recruiting next season or you're looking at 2-8 and a LOT of injuries, San Jose...

Did you feel that huge blast of air coming out of the Texas-Oklahoma corridor?  That was the Big 12 letting out a collective "Whew!"  Their conference winner now doesn't have to play Fresno State in front of an empty stadium, with little TV audience to boot.  Thank goodness we don't have to put up with shoving schools like that into big, money making bowls next year, simply for the sake of political correctness.

@WHO*IS*ESPN Boise State competed. Utah competed.   We don't know if they can compete until they are given a chance.

@clu As proud as SJSU is about knocking off Fresno State......clearly the big picture benefit to their school and MW was overlooked. The conference lost major money AND San Jose has no guarantee it gets a bowl anyway. Didn't expect them to roll over....but, pulling out all stops with trick plays, on side kicks and bombs away passing cost them more than they realize.

@BobRayTalbot I was still expecting Auburn or Missouri to trip up Alabama and Fresno State to pack the Rose Bowl.

If we were going for political correctness, we'd be taking every conference winner in a 16 team tournament already...

@Fierceblues @clu Yeah, great points, both of you.  San Jose should have taken one for the conference and thrown the game.   Where do you deep thinkers come up with this stuff?

@clu Auburn's got a shot at Bama, I think; but I doubt if they cash in.  I've stopped betting against Saban until somebody proves they can beat him when everything is on the table. He'll coldcock Missouri.
