Report: USC AD Pat Haden interviewed Broncos’ Jack Del Rio for head coach position

USC athletic director Pat Haden is looking far and wide for the Trojans’ next head coach, and that includes in the NFL. Per Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, Haden interviewed current Denver Broncos defensive coordinator and acting head coach Jack Del Rio. Del Rio, 50, played for the Trojans from 1981-85 and spent time in the NFL with the Saints, Chiefs, Cowboys, Vikings and Dolphins before entering the coaching ranks.

Ties to the school aside, Del Rio has no collegiate coaching experience. Haden hasn’t really tipped his hand when it comes to the program’s wish list, and it’s smart to interview as many candidates as possible to ensure USC winds up with the right fit. The Trojans will reportedly spend up to $6 million on the right coach, and it can’t afford to squander the momentum the team has been building under interim coach Ed Orgeron. Since USC fired Lane Kiffin at an airport terminal following a 62-41 loss to Arizona State on Sept. 28, it has gone 5-1. It hosted College GameDay this Saturday before upsetting Stanford 20-17.

Other names being linked to the Trojans’ job include Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin, Washington’s Steve Sarkisian and Vanderbilt’s James Franklin. Whichever candidate Haden eventually hires has a high bar to clear.

BURKE: Would Jack Del Rio leave the Broncos to take the USC head-coaching job?

Orgeron has a lot of coaching experience, and the kids love him. If he can finish the season with a win over UCLA, give him another year -- let's see what he can do.

Del Rio will never again be a head coach in the NFL. Jack left the Jaguars in shambles devoid of leadership and Jack was just a terrible head coach unfit for that position. Huge mistake USC thinking this inept buffoon Del Rio can coach.

Its stunning to see how much the PAC12 landscape has changed.  USC fans now storm the field when the beat Stanford.  What Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw have done with that program is quite amazing.

Great to see USC Fight On under Orgeron. Just hoping SC will find a way to keep him on in a capacity other than HC, like recruiting (his strength). The in-game adjustments at halftime have to be better than just 3 points in the second half if you want to be HC at a school willing to spend $6m for a coach.

Typical USC, the coach they have is doing an outstanding job and they are more concerned about something with a big name than somebody that is proving they can do the job.

Jack Del Rio is a terrible coach.  No NFL teams wants him as head coach.  Whomth eh hell could Del Rio recruit?? Keep Eddie O. or Hire franklin or Sumlin

USC doesn't need a name, it needs a solid coach. Every week that goes by makes it harder to argue that Orgeron hasn't earned the spot.

Del Rio is a bad head coach. Anyone in Jacksonville will tell you he is one of the reasons the Jags are so bad; he ran them into the ground.

Hayden should not be greedy and stay smart. Orgeron is the guy solidified by the huge win vs. Stanford and his team building with the student body.

Who was it that hired a defensive "genius" from the patriots... was it Notre Dame?  How did that work out?  Nebraska made a bold move and hired a coach who had coached a team to the Super Bowl.. and how did that turn out?   IMO USC will regret it if it chooses to "go big" and shell out big bucks for Del Rio... when they have a interim coach that the players seemed to respond to, and has been said to be a good recruiter.

Is it just me, or is that a scary picture of Jack Del Rio.  Almost as if he's an alien taking over the teams

Under Orgeron, the team has gone 5-1, hosted GameDay this week and upset Stanford. Whoever Haden ends up hiring has a high bar to clear.

They may have their guy there already...Either way Orgeron has another head coahing gig coming his way.

@brucem Or they could try and sign the coach from the Toyota commercials...  The other one, not Craig T. Nelson.

@JeffBockert Didn't read the article?   Jack Del Rio was interviewed several weeks back.  Not after yesterday's win.   Oh, and any competent person in charge of hiring a coach is going to interview more than one candidate.

@James150 How did JDR run the Jags into the ground?  He was not the person doing the drafting and signing of players.

@Steve Phillips If he isn't hired, it would be because he doesn't have the image projection they are looking for.  Winning fixes that and he has proven he can take a team that an image guy couldn't get moving and win with it.

@j7apple It seems USC isn't considering Orgeron at all for the permanent spot. And I really don't see why.  I love to see him replace Randy Edsall at Maryland when USC replaces him.

@j7apple I think a few of us would welcome him to Lincoln Nebraska.

@doghockey @James150 Agreed.  JDR did more with less than most any other HC in the NFL.  Personally, I hope he isn't interested in the NCAA game because I'd like to see him stick with Fox in Denver.
