Report: USC willing to pay its next head football coach $6 million per year

It’s no secret that USC is searching for the school’s next head football coach. Now, it sounds like the Trojans are willing to break the bank for the right hire.

USC is willing to pay its next head coach up to $6 million per year, according to a report from ESPN.com’s Travis Haney.

How serious are the Trojans? One industry source told me this week that USC is willing to extend an offer of up to $6 million a year to get its man. Yes, that’s more than Nick Saban makes (for now).

Trojans athletic director Pat Haden, who fired Lane Kiffin in an airport terminal on Sept. 29, has been mum on details surrounding the school’s wish list. Whether or not interim head coach Ed Orgeron (4-1 since taking over) emerges as a serious long-term candidate, several other names have surfaced in connection to the opening: Jack Del Rio, Vanderbilt’s James Franklin and Washington’s Steve Sarkisian have all been mentioned as possibilities.

However, a report last week suggested that USC has zeroed in on Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, who currently makes $3.1 million per year with the Aggies.

and i'll bet they end up with a Steve Alford type just like UCLA did.how about Al Golden from Miami or the Defensive COORDINATOR from Michigan State.

Jack Del Rio is not fit to coach  USC. Del Rio was terrible.

USC needs a coach that runs a pro style offense like Saban does. With the talent that USC draws year in and year out, the Trojans should run with the big boys and  play ball control offense and smash mouth defense. No gimmick coach that runs a spread is gonna work there.

Look you guys, Muschamp is available. After Kiffen, what the Trojans need is Muschamp!

Peterson is going to USC....Saban to Texas because Bama will be on probation

where does it end?  This is not pro football, and universities and fans are increasingly bearing the burden of these outrageous costs.  6 million?  If they are that desperate, they deserve people like Lane Kiffin.

They've got a big stadium to fill -- something they've only done a few times since it was built.

If Ed Orgeron beats Stanford and UCLA, he will be the coach and he would be paid in the 3-4 million range with the ability to hire the best staff possible.  Fight on!

I'd like to see Boise States Peterson in the picture.

Only problem with Kevin Sumlin is that his teams never play any D.  You have to have a good D to win year in and year out...Just ask Saban.

I like Sumlin, but ask Gene Chizik what happens to your coaching career when your once in a lifetime gravy train leaves for the NFL.

This is all moot, as the Trojans are going to whup Stanford's butt tomorrow night! Go coach O!

Ok, ok.. I give in.. I will do it, but please, I don't need 6 million.. 3 will be good enough to start.  Just give me a week to review all of the games Lane coached and I assure you I won't be making those mistakes.  Now, if I do happen to beat Lanes winning record, I assure you I will be asking for the additional 3 mil.   You don't need no big name, you just need Cool.

Hire jack Del rio and be the laughing stock mof college football.  Rio is a bottom feeder and a terrible head coach.  No NFL team is going to hire Del Rio ever again. make the PAC 12 happy and hire Jack.

Saban's wife is thinking....hmm, live on the beach in Malibu California or stay in the nasty humid south?

Saban's going to USC that's a factoid.

@BigBubba 6 million is chump change for institutions like USC. You're right, this isn't pro football, they don't have to pay their players millions of dollars each every single year like NFL owners have to.

@BigBubba You are absolutely correct.  Oregon's former coach before Chip Kelley - I don't remember his name, he's now a broadcaster or color analyst for ESPN - is the highest paid pensioner for the Oregon Public Employee Retirement System.  The people of Oregon will be paying him something close to a million a year for the rest of his life and that money does NOT come out of the Oregon football budget.

Stupid troll. The athletic department pays the HC. EX: In '12, Bama's Athletic department brought in approximately 128 million. Saban got 5.5 million of that. The amount brought in is an increase of almost 50% since Saban's arrival. Do you think he's worth. Bama's President and Board Of Trustees certainly do...

@mikalrod there just seems to be something really wrong when one refers to "trojans" and "Stanfords butt." in the night.  Just my opinion.

@DamionMosher Maybe after they buy a couch, they'll start shopping for a coach.  But then we all have our priorities.

@JeffBockert Yes...let's please move to a bankrupt state that is going to tax us out the behind.  Not to mention the whiny hippies everywhere.  Saban seems like a guy who loves lazy hippies, right?

DonStrong

@x72 Yes, you have hit it on the heat. Sabin and his wife will buy a mansion in Beverly Hills!

@x72 No way,  Jose!  He already rakes in $5.5 Million and several more millions on top of that!  Why would he go to USC when he is already cementing himself as a legend bigger than Bear Bryant?  No reason in this world would get him to USC!

BigBubba
BigBubba

@JamesTeasdale Ahem.  You are the stupid troll.  So glad that you can respect who may have a different opinion than yours.

Look up every program in the nation.  Outside of Michigan, Ohio State, USC, Notre Dame, Texas, Bama...Not sure how many others are completely self funded.  And then tell me how many of these programs have raised ticket prices, have forced seat "donations" on top of the tickets, have increased the price of all paraphernalia, etc.....

My question is :  where does it end?  The entire system is out of whack.  At Penn State, after instituting seat licenses, they lost approximately 25% of ticket holders, BEFORE the Jerry Sandusky scandal.  Now their stadium is rarely full.  USC doesn't have a full stadium for the majority of its games.  Miami's stadium is rarely even half full.  They have priced themselves out in the name of winning.

Cool

@donald5 @JeffBockert You mention "whiny hippies" as you whine and pout sitting behind a computer. Sitting on your lazy behind whining about "lazy hippies."    I think I would rather be thought of as a hippie, whiny and lazy, than a brain dead inbreed who can't see the irony of his own comments.

I thought Saban was going to coach Texas after Mack Brown resigns for personal reasons at the end of the season when they fail to win the Big 12 in a year they finally beat Okla.

Anyone who'd prefer to live in Tuscaloosa rather than someplace like Newport Beach is out of his mind.

@BigBubba @JamesTeasdale You're right, and he's equally unaware probably that those self-funded programs also give back a good bit of money for other athletic programs under Title IX.

And for those who are educated about such things, the money that  football programs like Ohio State, Texas, etc bring in pales in comparison to the federal grant money they get for everything else on their budgets.

Incidentally, the Money/Forbes article from a few years back had like 4 teams from the Big 10 and SEC in the top 10, and I believe USC was way back at like 13 or something. There was only one Pac12 school in that list I believe.  Penn State was way up there but I'm guessing after the fiscal nightmare of Jerry Sandusky, they took a major hit on their bottom line.

Here's an updated list from 2013:

@Cool @donald5 @JeffBockert And "inbreed" is a verb....   If you are going to insult me and call me "inbred", it is better to use proper English.  That is also ironic.

@black_belt3 Saban's wife needs to live in Venice Beach. She hates the dreary social life of Alabama.

@black_belt3 Yes... and he was going to be the coach of the Browns or the Cowboys last year.

chiefsdodgerslakers24

@Phroggo @BlueZoo @x72 Normally, I'd agree with that, but top recruits year after year constantly choose to go to Alabama (football) and wherever John Calipari is coaching at (basketball) year after year.

JamesTeasdale

@DonStrong @Phroggo @BlueZoo @x72 I'm a Bama fan living in Los Angeles and you two guys are delusional. Saban's not going anywhere and Venice Beach sucks. I lived there for years and the whole place smells like piss. Worse than New Orleans....
