Baylor extends Art Briles’ contract through forever (or 2023)

Art Briles just got himself paid. Briles, who has led the Bears to an 8-0 record and a No. 5 ranking in the BCS, has been at the school 2008 and has a career 41-30 record at Baylor. There have been rumors all year that Texas might be targeting Briles (even if he has no interest in accepting the position) should the job open up in Austin. The new extension should put those rumors to rest.

Under Briles, Baylor has seen a Heisman Trophy winner in Robert Griffin III, three straight bowl appearances and is currently building a new 45,000 capacity on-campus stadium opening in 2014. It’s safe to say the school would like to keep him around, and an extension into a year sci-fi writers were imagining just a few decades ago is a pretty good start.

Baylor plays Texas Tech (7-3, 4-3) on Saturday.

Good, new stadium,,,maybe that will have some to come to the game,,,,,,,will the new stadium have tarps covering seating as well?......just wondering.........Floyd Casey Stadium has 50,000 seating, this new one will have 45,000?......maybe they did consider the tarp issue.

Of course,,,tu,,,not being able to stand all the new going up around them will want a dome stadium built for them.

I admire anyone that can get someone to come to Waco who has anywhere else to go

Briles isn't a young guy anymore, plus he's a Texas guy through and through. I always thought that the only other schools he *might* consider would be UT and A&M. Looks like he's happy at Baylor.

Ten years or whenever he gets an offer he can't refuse from another University or the NFL. Who draws up these useless contracts for colleges?

@JimKirkwood1 You think Tuscaloosa Alabama or Lincoln Nebraska is any nicer than Waco? Players go to schools where they can win, and where they can learn from a great coach.

@WilyCoyoteSuperGenius Not sure, but I imagine this contract will have a penalty clause in which the school would be getting a couple million from whichever school hires him.  That money usually makes school officials feel pretty good.
