Missouri Southern State assistant coach shot and killed outside movie theater

MIssouri Southern State Lions

Police have arrested a suspect in the death of Missouri Southern State assistant coach Derek Moore, who was shot and killed outside of a Joplin, Mo., movie theater on Friday night, according to The Joplin Globe. As a result of the incident, the school has canceled its homecoming activities. The shooting occurred outside the Regal movie theater near a Joplin mall at around 9:50 p.m. Police believe it “seemed to be a targeted incident and not random.”

From the Globe:

“Due to the tragic death tonight of Missouri Southern employee, homecoming activities are canceled and the football game versus Lindenwood has been postponed,” university relations and marketing director Cassie Mathes said in a statement. “Additional details will be forthcoming later in the day.”

Missouri Southern interim president Alan Marble and head football coach Daryl Daye have also released statements:

“We are stunned and deeply saddened by this tragic incident, and our prayers are with Derek’s family,” said MSSU interim president Alan Marble. “We are ensuring that our employees and students have the emotional support they need during this difficult time.”

“Derek was new to Missouri Southern but he was embraced by our campus and community,” said head football coach Daryl Daye. “He was a very likeable person who always had a smile on his face and made friends easily with our staff and players. This is an unspeakable loss for the MSSU athletics family.”

Moore was 37 and in his first season on the Lions’ staff.

Why in the world would you cancel school activities because of this.  It is not as if the whole student body is grieving.  Most probably did not even know who the guy was who was hitting on the wife of another guy.  Anymore, it just seems like a knee jerk PC action to show "we care" which ends up being meaningless.

The suspect's wife is a reserve MSSU police officer.  It appears that Coach Moore was dating the estranged wife of the Suspect, Jeffrey Bruner, and was shot after an argument in front of the movie theater.  A divorce filing is on file from 2000 but was dropped in 2001.  No other divorce filings were found.
