Miami star running back Duke Johnson will miss the rest of the season with a broken ankle, sources told Susan Miller Degnan of the Miami Herald. Johnson will reportedly undergo surgery next week.

Johnson was injured late in Miami’s 41-14 loss to Florida State on Saturday. With the Seminoles leading 35-14 in the third quarter, Johnson was stuffed on fourth-and-two from the ‘Noles’ 26-yard line. Not only was Johnson unable to pick up the first down, but he also went down in pain. He was immediately carted into the Hurricanes’ locker room.

Reports stated that Johnson’s right leg was placed in a cast shortly thereafter.

The Hurricanes had featured Johnson prominently since he returned to the starting lineup after suffering a head injury against North Carolina on Oct. 17. He carried 30 times for 168 rushing yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 24-21 victory over Wake Forest, and he had 23 carries against Florida State on Saturday night before he went down. For the season, Johnson had 920 rushing yards and six scores.

Backup running back Dallas Crawford, who carried 33 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns while filling in for Johnson against the Tar Heels, will likely become the ‘Canes feature back moving forward.

If he had a broken ankle why was he helped off the field limping all the while rather than on a stretcher? Brilliant, trainers... simply brilliant.

@UleNotknow Thanks doc.  Guys have played with broken bones.   Getting off the field is not going to exacerbate the situation.   Oh, and how were the trainers to know?   By using that portable xray machine that they all carry around?

@MarkCleary @DavidandTracyAgee LMAO.  Are you always a moron or just about football.  Who said I ever hated Miami???  I don't think you will find one post ever from me about hating or even disliking Miami.  Frankly, I am glad to see them back.  You need to get out more.
