AP Poll: Florida State a big winner after major shakeup of Week 8
Welcome to the carnage. With five teams in the AP Top 10 going down on Saturday, Week 8’s poll was detonated and voters were left trying to piece it back together.
Clemson, LSU, Texas A&M, Louisville, UCLA, South Carolina and Georgia all fell, making room for other teams to move up and some interesting storylines to emerge. There are now just two undefeated SEC teams, Alabama and Missouri, and Florida State leapfrogged Ohio State (and picked up two first-place votes) after its decimation of Clemson. UCF joined the poll after beating Louisville, although the Knights find themselves ranked behind Louisville. Auburn jumped all the way from No. 24 to No. 11 after its win over Texas A&M.
The complete AP Poll (with first-place votes in parentheses) is below:
1. Alabama (55)
2. Oregon (3)
3. Florida State (2)
4. Ohio State
10. Texas Tech
14. Texas A&M
15. Fresno State
16. Virginia Tech
19. Oklahoma State
20. South Carolina
23. Northern Illinois
• It’s a judgment call, sure, but not sure why Michigan State isn’t ranked. The loss to Notre Dame hurts the Spartans, but MSU’s defense is about as dominant as Virginia Tech’s, and Sparty might just be the best team in the Legends division. It’s a toss up regardless between Michigan, Nebraska and Michigan State right now.
• Missouri moved up to No. 5 after a pretty strong win over Florida on Saturday. Despite playing with freshman quarterback Maty Mauk for the injured James Franklin, the Tigers moved the ball and played well defensively. Mizzou controls its own destiny in the SEC East and has South Carolina this coming Saturday.
• Fresno State climbed up to No. 15 after the Bulldogs’ win over UNLV, and NIU stayed at No. 23 after beating Central Michigan. These are your two non-AQ hopes to bust the BCS.
