Pat Dye: ‘All (Condoleezza Rice) knows about football is what somebody told her’

It's Called The College Football Playoff, Postseason
Pat Dye finds himself in similar territory to David Pollack after criticizing Condoleezza Rice's credentials for the playoff selection committee.

Former Auburn coach Pat Dye has joined the list of men in hot water for the their comments regarding the reports that Condoleezza Rice will serve on the selection committee for the College Football Playoff. Following ESPN college football analyst David Pollack’s comments Saturday that the selection committee should be made up of people who have played football and therefore should not include women, Dye expressed a similar opinion on WJOX 94.5′s morning show, The Opening Drive:

“All she knows about football is what somebody told her,” Dye said of Rice. “Or what she read in a book or what she saw on television. To understand football, you’ve got to play with your hand in the dirt.

“I love Condoleezza Rice and she’s probably a good statesman and all of that, but how in the hell does she know what it’s like out there when you can’t get your breath and it’s 110 degrees and the coach asks you to go some more?”

Dye’s comments, of course, ignore the fact that the one widely used poll that is comprised entirely of male voters who have played with their hand in the dirt — the USA Today Coaches Poll — is frequently maligned for its inaccuracy. Dye also glosses over the fact that the rest of the BCS formula, which the College Football Playoff selection committee is replacing, is largely determined by media members, most of whom have never played, or at least not at a high level in the game like Dye would presumably like.

ELLIS: ESPN’s David Pollack: Women don’t belong on playoff selection committee

In regard to Rice’s placement on the committee, Dye also worried about the former secretary of state’s political background interfering with her ability to select teams in an unbiased manner.

“That goes back to politics,” Dye said. “Which one she likes best, which one’s the smoothest talker. The game is played on the field.”

Complete audio of Dye’s interview can be found here.

Maybe it was a gay rights issue.

Rice does not belong on the committee, not because she is a female nor because she is a politician.

She has devoted her life to the service of our country and regardless of your party choice that is commendable. She doesn't belong on the committee for the simple fact that she doesn't have the experience to be there. It has become such a big subject and no one is saying the obvious in the media. I don't care about what her politics are and I especially don't care if she is a female. I would just prefer someone with a more intimate knowledge and experience in the sport.

Pat Dye shouldn't be on the committee either.

I wonder what Dye thinks about Dan Radakovich, Mike Tranghese, Michael Gould, and Tom Jernstedt being named to the board. None of them have football experience. None of them has had their "hand in the dirt." What a tool. If you are going to be a sexiest just say, "Hey..she's a woman. She doesn't belong here." Don't try to walk around the tree thinking it will fall. Just go ahead and chop it down. He raised no valid points. Just showed his ignorance. Pat Dye was a corrupt individual forced out of coaching. He has zero credibility in just about everything.

First....Dye happens to be absolutely RIGHT about this.

2.  There are other women far far far more qualified than Condi Rice.

3.  We don't need a committee.  That makes the entire playoff void of objectivity.

I don't understand why he's "in hot water." Can't anyone express their personal opinion any more? Or are we so politically correct that's just not allowed.

I like Pat Dye because I am also a misogynistic jerk living in a past, more sexist, age.

As an Auburn fan, I understand the importance of Pat Dye to our history.  However, 1.  Why is Pat Dye's commentary in the least  bit relevant to the national discussion of the selection committee?  2.  Pat Dye has some occasional fried chickenesque comments that still stand as slightly humorous.  At the same time he's still kind of like the crazy uncle that you overlook when he says certain things cause he's blood.

Pat Dye - Fool.  Period. End of sentence. End of discussion.

The whole selection process is about "politic" - might as well have a professional politician - after all, she can't do any worse than the debacles we've had to sit through the last few years.....

Rice can do this if she really knows football but I feel too truly get it right each member  must watch no less then 2 games from every team in the all of football. I watch about 6 games a week I eat breath and sleep football really and I have done this for the past 22 years but I still would not want this job. because really I can not see a way to p0ick just 4 really good teams

EX.

.is bama better then Georgia right now. I do not think so. Bama has yet  to be tested.  and they only play 2 middle of the top 25 pack this year and no one outside the SEC. note to Bama put a top  Big 10 Pac 12,Acc or Big 12 team one your schedule hell even ND would look better then what they have.

So why is he in hot water? She DOESN'T understand what it is about and neither do 80% of MALES who never coached or played. Sad the p.c. world is taking over......now Rice, go make me lunch !!!!

How many of our sportswriters and analysts - you know, the ones who know the information, have done research, have watched games - have never played football?  And how many people who have played football are completely clueless as to who is good now?  Whether Rice is qualified or not, to say she isn't because she never played the game is ludicrous.  Just be honest, Pat - if it's because she has a vagina, then say that, but don't roll some BS about not having played as the reason.  While Rice may have a vagina, she definitely has bigger balls than Pat Dye.

yippee, boy what a doo doo head.  The more I hear from "guys" who don't want Condi on the committee, I start believing that is a fantastic idea. Now, instead of her and therefore any other woman being judged on her accomplishments on the committee in the future these guys have almost single-handedly ensured that there will be a woman on the committee regardless of skill or credentials.  I believe that she actually has better credentials than most that could be considered and her involvement will ensure that academics and student-athlete considerations are at least acknowledged.

Pat Dye couldn't touch Condi's table scraps in terms of basic intelligence. Come to think of it, that's true of almost any college football coach or analyst. Politics aside (and I'm a Democrat), Rice is one smart cookie. And she grew up watching football as a girl, and it's her biggest hobby. If you don't think she'd beat out 99% of the candidates in terms of the ability to analyze who deserved to be in the playoff games, you don't know jack nothing.

@JimBowski No, but your comment is confirmation that you're a moron.

Wesley7

@chris s1 Except that is silly. The play-off should be the nation's best teams, not the conference champions. Look at 2011. Alabama and LSU wen to the national title game because they were, arguably, the two best teams--even though Bama didn't win its conference. But if playoff just took conference winners, you'd have locked out Bama (who went on to trounce LSU for the title and only had the one loss on the year) and let in people like Clemson, who had 3 losses and were still the best their conference had to offer.

Or last year, when Ohio was ineligible for post-season play, Wisconsin won the Big Ten...as an unranked FIVE loss team. That's who "deserved" or "should" go to a playoff series over a far-superior 1-loss Oregon who didn't get to win their Conference (their one loss was to Standford who went on to win the conference but still end the year ranked 5 spots below Oregon after the bowls--Oregon ended AP #2 and Stanford #7 with a bowl loss)? But you'd have iced Oregon in a top 4 play-off to give preference to someone like Wisconsin?

The play off should be the best teams in the country and being the best team in a conference does not mean you are one of the best teams int he country.

@lionoah @muser While I am not in support of her joining the committee, you do realize, lionoah, that Rice served under Bush and most so-called "liberals" disagreed vehemently with her policies, particularly her hawkish ones that supported more war. They would most likely enjoy seeing as little of her as possible. On top of that, your use of a label to try to deride someone simply for having an opinion is, well, sad and intellectually lazy.
