Texas WR Mike Davis defends controversial hit: ‘I’d do the same thing’

Big 12, Iowa State Cyclones, Texas Longhorns

Having been lucky to first escape an ejection from Texas’s 31-30 win over Iowa State and then to avoid a suspension from the Big 12, Longhorns wide receiver Mike Davis could have been contrite in the aftermath of his after-the-whistle hit on Cyclones safety Deon Broomfield, apologizing for the hit and helping push the story into everyone’s rearview. Instead, Davis further fanned the fire by his refusal to back down from the hit, despite plenty of video evidence to show just how dirty the play was.

Davis’ comments Monday, from BurntOrangeNation.com:

“If we have another run-pass situation, I’d do the same thing. If the DB’s loafing, he deserves to get cut.”

Davis also said that “people blew it out of proportion” and that “it really wasn’t that bad.”

David did say he was glad that Broomfield wasn’t hurt on the play, a serious possibility given the hit seemed almost designed to force a severe knee injury. Texas coach Mack Brown, who after the game said Davis was merely “competing,” backed away from his initial reaction Monday, saying Davis was “wrong” to make the hit.

Davis leads the Longhorns in receiving yards per game with 71.75 per contest and four touchdowns on the season. Although the Big 12 publicly reprimanded Davis for his “violation of the rule prohibiting physically abusive acts toward an opponent’s team members,” it declined to suspend him, leaving Davis available for Saturday’s Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma.

Go for it, tough guy.  Everyone saw what you did to Iowa State.  Let's see you give OU a game on Saturday.  Mack Brown's Texas Football: "As Soft As Their Coach's Beer Belly!"

I understand Davis' frustration (shown both in the cheap shot and his callous follow-up mouthings)... he realizes UT is unalterably headed to another wasted season. Never has a team with so much done so little for so often. I'll never understand why top recruits keep going there... instead of almost ANY other TX college who actually gives a damn. This is why Texans are so excited for the Baylor/TCU/TxTech/aTm/Rice/Houston teams. Thug player on lousy team from arrogant institution.

Well, at least he has to cajones to stick by his decision to commit one of the most blatant examples of bad sportsmanship all season.

"You can't fix stupid." Pretty much applies with this punk.  Maybe he will do it again, and because of his comments on this matter he will be suspended the rest of the year.
