Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to be named to the College Football Playoff’s selection committee, a source told the Associated Press on Friday.

Rice is the latest in a string of reported members of the upcoming committee, which will select the four teams to participate in the College Football Playoff that kicks off after the 2014 season. Earlier this week, CBSSports.com reported that West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez and USC athletic director Pat Haden are all expected to be named to the 12- to 18-member committee. On Friday ESPN reported that former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese is also expected to join the committee.

Sources told CBSSports.com’s Jeremy Fowler that each of the five power conferences — the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC — are likely to have at least one representative on the committee. College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock has said that the committee members could be officially unveiled as soon as the end of the current regular season.

The AP also reported that a former Air Force Academy superintendent, as well as an ex-NCAA executive with experience working the NCAA basketball tournament, are both expected to join the committee. But Rice is the first reported member of the committee who has no current ties to college athletics. Still, that could be a good thing, as SI.com’s Stewart Mandel notes.

Yeah I guess if you are wrong about the greatest foreign policy disaster in the history of the US then  that would qualify a person to pick the playoff teams.     At what point do we get the opinions of people who dont repeatedly screw stuff up.   I havent got the US into any stupid wars over lies.   So why not me for the committee?

Whenever women move in on anything, I lose interest. There's nothing wrong with women being involved in traditionally-male sports but when they are, the conversation changes. When that Patrick chick started in NASCAR, she's all anyone talked about for a couple years. When - not if, but when - the first female starts in the NFL, that's all the media will talk about. The importance of the actual game will fade into obscurity. You can see that now with women announcers. It's no longer about the game. It's about the personalities covering the game. It's not for nothing that ESPN is often referred to as "the TMZ of the sports world."

This is a PR or PC joke.  Condoleezza is a super intelligent person, but she is not even close to being one of the top 20 people qualified for being on this committee.  Her appointment already has put this committee creditability in question.  It is going to be a lot of people questioning the logic of picking the four teams already, but this gives them all the ammunition they will need regarding the competency of the committee.  Please Condi, turn this request down for all of our sakes!

What's up with the ignorant rants? This is a football forum and Rice is 10x more intelligent than any of those posting. If you want to be liberal "toadies" and trolls, go to CNN.

Condolezza Rice is not a toadie. She was the Provost at Stanford Univ., a Professor of Political Economy at Stanford, the Dirtector of Stanford's Global Center for Business and the Economy. Senior Fellow at the Institute for International Studies. I could go on. She is not a toadie. If you disagree with her views then why not just tell us why you disagree rather than engage in name-calling?

Why is anyone honoring this W Bush toadie?

And the reason an incompetent clueless war criminal would be selected is?????  On 9/11 there was a memo on her desk referencing aliens in flight training schools who weren't interested in learning how to LAND planes, and a another memo titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside the USA."

In other news, Lou Holtz will be brought in to consult on foreign policy matters.

Condoleezza Rice advertising for NFL saying she woke up at 3.00 am in the morning in  Israel to watch Super Bowl. Super Bowl starts at 6.20 PM EST during the first week of Feb (daylight savings time). The local time in Israel is 1.20 am. Some fan she is, if she misses the first two hours of Super Bowl. Somebody did not check the facts. :-)

Condi Rice is strictly a front person. Leader Cheney will rule the selection committee.

Rice does not go to the bathroom without first getting permission from Leader Cheney.

Really? This is just a terrible idea. Y not have former coaches or someone that currently has no affliation with a school on the committee? At least someone with ties to the sport. This is just for publicity. Ridiculous!

there is so much money in college football bowl games that anyone on this committee should have more than just a general knowledge of college football like i do.  please be an expert- is that so much to ask.

All these reports are being leaked so we feel a little better when the flood of SEC officials are put on the committee.

Oh please no.  Just because kickers can practice kicking field goals between the gap in her teeth doesn't mean this b.itch should have anything to do with college football.

@OSU But she's a woman, OSU, and she's black. That gives her a gold-plated pass to do or say whatever she likes. Not to mention the fact that everyone will salaam with their foreheads on the carpet when she walks into the room. A female version of Obama.

@TCUfan Stupid is as stupid does.   I dont give a damn about her formal education.   There are people far more intelligent than her that have not had the opportunities that she has had to exhibit that intelligence.   Ultimately intelligence comes down to making the right decisions.   Just for the record H. Clinton is no smarter.    Rice  has had her opportunity on the world stage and she effed it up costing hundreds of thousands of lives.   She should not get another chance.

@mike.russell I can guarantee you and would bet my life savings on the fact that she is much smarter than you and has accomplished more than you could in your wildest dreams. Your post assures my winning the bet.

@Joe R2 You don't get it, Joe. Just like Obama, she doesn't have to know anything about anything. She's a female and she's black. Affirmative action free pass. Just like Obama who doesn't know anything either. End of story.

@Joe R2 It's a much smaller gap than the one between your ears though. You could play an entire baseball game in there.
