Should this have been a penalty on Texas’ Mike Davis?

Iowa State Cyclones, Texas Longhorns

The answer is probably an easy one. Forget the targeting rule as written, this is intent to injure another player (In this case, the other player at risk of being injured was Iowa State defensive back Deon Broomfield) and should be grounds for ejection. There’s no excuse for a play like this from Texas wide receiver Mike Davis in the Longhorns’ game against Iowa State.

And most of the Twitterverse seems to agree:

Mack Brown continually proves to be a mediocre coach and no leader of young men.  He motivates with milk and cookies, and generally ignores bad behavior by his "kids" (as calls them), patting their wrists.  As for Davis, the worst punishment for him would be to make him play the entire Oklahoma game.  I'd love to see what would happen if he cheapshotted a Sooner.   And Mack Brown, after the refs handed him the game on a silver platter, acted like a fool at the press conference.   He preened and crowed like he had just won the Big 12 title.   Reality at high noon eastern time next week, Mackovic Brown.  They pulled Kiffin off the bus last week to fire him?  After Saturday's upcoming debacle, they should put our giant fraudulent "CEO" on a Greyhound and send him back to Tennessee so's we can get a legitimate football coach in here.  Brown's "10-Win Season!" scam is just that, made up of about 70% of his victories against outmanned Iowa States and NM States.   He has ducked every challenge he can, and has been running scared of OU his entire career, so it's poetic justice that his spiritual depantsing will occur this week on national TV against the Sooners.  How a coach could be allowed to stay this long is a tribute to what a con artist Mack Brown truly is.  The Bernie Madoff of college football.  Mack Brown, y'all... "Fighting His Guts Out For Another Big Pay Check!"

After watching the cheap shot this will no doubt be reviewed and the player will be suspended for a game or two.

If he blew out my ACL, I'd *$%% sue him.  What a scum bag, coward.

I am not an ISU fan, but that is a very dirty, dangerous play and merits a suspension

I guess that the refs had changed their stripes to burnt orange and white, sine they couldn't even get the fumble at the end of the game correct.  The replay official was busy counting the cash in his envelope from the Mac Brown supporters and couldn't see that the Texas running back wasn't down and the whistle blew after the Iowa State player had the ball and was headed toward the opposite end zone.

That was, indeed, a cheap shot that calls for an ejection and at least a one game suspension. BTW, I am a Texas fan. There is no excuse for that kind of a cheap shot.

Of course a Texas player gets away with this bulls***. Davis should be suspended for at least a game. If Mack Brown had any balls he would have sat Davis for the rest of this game but he is fighting for his job so he doesn't care.

@carnage_2012 At Texas? Mack Brown immediately jumped to his defense over it. He's not going anywhere.

@Aggie81 Remember this is the Big TX conference.  They will do what they can to help them no matter what.

@Aggie81 You should move to Roswell NM with the rest of the conspiracy theorists!

@dethkat666 Agreed. I would buy the "didn't hear the whistle" excuse perhaps (seems to hear it most other times), but the fact remains there was simply no reason to hit this player. Even if the play was live, he was no where near the ball, had stopped running himself, and it wasn't like you grabbed his arms to block him but full on DOVE at his knees. There simply is NO excuse for this delayed hit, whistle heard or not. The player should sit out, but Brown won't dare do it.

@T_guy35 Job?  It's GONE!  He's just coaching out the string on an overall terrific career.
