Purdue coach Darrell Hazell announced that freshman Danny Etling has been named the team’s starting quarterback, with previous starter Rob Henry moving to safety, the Associated Press reports.

Hazell yanked Henry during the first half of the Boilermakers’ 55-24 loss to Northern Illinois last weekend after the senior threw two interceptions on consecutive drives. Henry finished 5-of-16 for 130 yards and one touchdown. Etling finished the game for Purdue, completing 19-of-39 passes for 241 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Purdue (1-4) could use a boost on offense, where the team ranks 84th in the country in passing offense (214.5 yards per game) and 117th in total offense (301.6). Etling was an early enrollee with the Boilermakers who threw for 1,505 yards and 11 touchdowns for South Vigo High School in Terre Haute, Ind. He was a four-star prospect and Rivals.com’s ninth-ranked pro-style passer of 2013.

you know you must suck pretty bad to go from starting qb to being moved to defense in favor of a freshman no matter how talented he may be.
