Saturday’s Navy-Air Force game could be in jeopardy as a result of government shutdown

Fans have seen Congress have an effect on sports before, with the public hearings on steroids in baseball being a notable example. It’s almost unheard of, however, for the legislative branch to impact specific games. With last night’s shutdown of some government services — the result of a standoff between Democrats and Republicans over the Affordable Care Ac — that could soon change.

According to the Capital Gazette, there is a chance that this Saturday’s game between Navy and Air Force might not be played.

[Falcons associate athletic director Troy Garnhart] explained that upper-class cadets at the Air Force Academy are considered military personnel, which means they could be subject to travel restrictions under the shutdown.

Scott Strasemeier, Naval Academy associate athletic director, could not confirm Tuesday morning whether the game will take place.

First the government shuts down national parks, delays workers’ paychecks and stops the Panda Cam. Now it might cancel service academy football? For shame.

The official announcement will be made by Thursday about the Navy-Air Force game, as well as about the status of the Army-Boston College contest in Chestnut Hill, which is also scheduled for Oct. 5. For now, service academy athletic contests are being canceled or postponed left and right.

Both academies have privately-funded football programs - no federal money at all.  An official with the Naval Academy athletic department just said that this situation is a matter of "optics" - that is, the federal government is playing the Washington Monument Gambit and making sure that the public is inconvenienced as much as possible by the shutdown.  Bleah.

Navy-Air Force is not a 'real' game, more like a neighborhood game, meaning who cares who wins, not like Alabama - Georgia or something important.  Cancel until 2020, who cares.

Sounds like a great time for a trip to Syria!

Army cadets are hoping the shutdown lasts through Dec 14th. That way they won't lose to Navy for the 12th year in a row.

Utter nonsense! Just another stunt by the Obama administration to punish the public for not supporting them. Just as Barack canceled White House tours and the flight teams 2013 schedules. The sooner we get that piece of crap out of the WH the better. Worst President EVER!

More good news about how less government improves things for us.

I don't understand the people that say 'Who cares?' You should care. We all should care. These games are the true essence of college sports, or at least what college sports are supposed to be. Virtually none of the service academy guys end up in the NFL. They go off and risk their lives so our cushy Saturdays of watching LSU-Georgia, Michigan-Ohio State, etc., can go on without a worry to ourselves. They should be held in honor, and they should not be denied playing in games that are huge to them because of what I will just call 'The Political Situation'. This is not a circumstance we should accept with apathy. It matters.

OMG !! No wonder there is so much concern about the shutdown !!

Just go find a field somewhere and play the game. I'm sure the TV networks would be falling all over themselves to cover it. Heck, Fox News, CNN and MSNBC might vie for the broadcast rights! Sean Hannity doing play by play and Chris Matthews as the color analyst! The real battle would be in the broadcast booth!

Who cares? It's JUST college football and is an extracurricular for these future military officers.

@RobertJacke Nah. Just the side that decided to shut down the government because it couldn't undo a law it didn't like. The other side isn't great, either, but at least it's not determined to shut down the government.

@MrArlington

Fund the govt except delay Obamacare for a year.  And Harry Reid said, "All or nothing."   It's Harry Reid's fault.

@John3 Save your politics and bias for the endless social forums where people have nothing better to do. Obama had nothing to do with this... its DOD's financial call due to Congress' impasse. It would be irresponsible to fund entertainment events when tens of thousands of people are furloughed from their jobs (with many more impacted). Get some perspective!

@Pat11 I love your dry sense of humor.  As they say, 90% of truth is said in jest.

@Rickapolis It is a football game & the big picture it matters not a bit.  I hope that the government is shut down for weeks or months, although that wish has no chance of coming true.   This is nothing but political grandstanding, and as they generally do, politicians use kids and military personnel as pawns in their disgusting games.   They collect several trillion in revenues every year and to use these players in a tug of war shows how low every one of them, republican and democrat, will go to fund their selfish agendas.

@JamesCampbell Tell that to those "future military officers" who bust their asses with a grueling academic regimen while practicing daily for these games. These games mean a lot to them, especially when they are playing another service academy.  The least we could do for these cadets is let them play the games while they still can. As another poster pointed out, college ball is it for most of these guys, they will never play on Sundays.

@Ericfollowedbyanumber My god, some of you folks are embarrassingly gullible.  This is a one-sided problem?   This is a bi-annual tap dance by both sides to ensure that they can keep ripping you off via the tax code.   They will go to the bitter end, yelling and screaming at each other, while getting plenty of you to follow suit.  They will then make a self-proclaimed heroic deal which will ensure the spending of billions that they do not have, while making promises to cut spending which they will not do.  And plenty of you will fall for the con.   FYI, during these mythological shutdowns that they use to keep the game rigged, approximately 80% of government will continue on, which makes your drama a rather laughable sham.  In fact, we could use a real shutdown to show how little many of these folks actually provide for their disgustingly large paychecks.

@MidwestGolfFan @MrArlington No. That's not how it works. I remember learning that if you want to change something with a law, you have to get it passed. You don't get to hold the rest of the country for ransom until you get your way.

@Mkmck @JamesCampbell

Actually, I'm guessing most of these future military officers understand reality, and given military demographics, support the shutdown.

Some are willing to suffer inconvenience to reach a specific goal for the greater good.

@RayPastora I'm sorry but the lawsuit you speak of was already shot down by the Supreme Court. The individual mandate was deemed constitutional.

Now who should be taking off what glasses?

RayPastora
RayPastora

Is that why the employer mandate was extended without congressional approval?  It was done by decree, which is against the law.  That's why there is a lawsuit against the government.  They didn't follow the law they passed and are changing the law based on rules and regulations versus actual legislation.  Remove your rose colored glasses and see the corruption for what it is.
