AP Poll: Top ten stays the same and Michigan continues to fall after Week 4

It was a week filled with historic spreads and stats, with (possible) running clocks and 12-minute quarters. And we haven’t yet hit the crest of college football madness. Whether this is the calm before the storm or ranked teams settling into their spots, the AP Poll after Week 4 didn’t see a whole lot of movers and shakers.

Oregon received four first-place votes this week over the single vote the Ducks got last week. Alabama was shaky against Colorado State, which may have earned Oregon those few extra votes.

Michigan continued to plummet, falling from No. 15 to No. 18, while Baylor (No. 19) and Florida (No. 20) swapped spots. The top 10 stayed exactly the same. Fresno State entered the top 25 after a Friday win over Boise State, and the Bulldogs are one of just three non-AQ teams (along with Northern Illinois and Navy) still undefeated. Arizona State dropped out of the poll with a 42-28 loss to Stanford.

The full list is below, with first-place votes in parentheses:

1) Alabama (56)
2) Oregon (4)
3) Clemson
4) Ohio State
5) Stanford
6) LSU
7) Louisville
8) Florida State
9) Georgia
10) Texas A&M
11) Oklahoma State
12) South Carolina
13) UCLA
14) Oklahoma
15) Miami
16) Washington
17) Northwestern
18) Michigan
19) Baylor
20) Florida
21) Ole Miss
22) Notre Dame
23) Wisconsin
24) Texas Tech
25) Fresno State

Three quick thoughts from the poll:

  • Michigan escaped for the second straight week, but this is why rankings in the early season are flawed. If we ranked based on just the results of the first four weeks, the Wolverines wouldn’t be on many ballots. Their best win, Notre Dame, has some shine off of it, and after back-to-back weeks with less than impressive showings over Akron and UConn, Michigan certainly doesn’t look like a ranked team right now.
  • It’s not a gauntlet, but Baylor has scored 60+ points in its first three games and has really impressed. While the No. 19 ranking is probably justified until we see the Bears beat some better opponents, they could be on the rise.
  • Favorites dominated (and mostly covered) in Week 4, so we didn’t see a lot of movement overall. It wouldn’t be a very exciting football season if things stayed status quo, and history tells us the craziness is coming in the next week or two. The only question who is going to fall?

Now that the AP Poll is dry and on the page, how do you feel? Anything surprising or outrageous?

I am so glad that Brady Hoke is the coach at Michigan.

One loss Arizona State falls out after losing to Stanford and one loss Wisconsin crawls back in after beating Purdue? ARIZONA STATE BEAT WISCONSIN LAST WEEK!!!

Punish teams that play Bethune Cookman and Idaho State!!! The ACC and Pac 12 are not all that that you can defend that crap.

And another thing, A&M has beaten three Junior Colleges, how do they warrant a Top Ten spot. Same old crap, they beat the lousy teams, then lose to the two good teams they play (LSU and Bama) and then argue that they would be undefeated if they didn't play in such a great conference. YOU PLAYED TWO GOOD TEAMS ALL YEAR!!

There simply are not that many good teams this year, mediocrity in the big money conferences. HOWEVER, you are going to have to explain to me how Georgia maintains a Top 10 spot. Overrated.

Back to back week ND gets bailed out by the refs, they shouldn't be in the top 25.

Why does SI not list the team records on this site?  Perhaps because there are still one-loss teams above the 3-0 Miami Hurricanes?

The next two weeks will tell a lot.  Michigan is 3rd tier.   Notre Dame  can beat most teams but definitely not a threat to beat the best teams.   Bama is not as good as last year and they are vulnerable.  LSU will tell a lot when they play Bama and UGA.  We shall see.

The AP poll counts for absolutely nothing.  Other than tradition, I don't know why they even have one anymore.

Why is Georgia in the top 20, for that matter was is South Carolina? Georgia was challenged by UNT for godsakes. South Carolina has lost to Georgia and beat no one.

Michigan should be in the Top 20 an ND I don't Hate even though I'm a CANES FAN 4 LIFE but the IRISH look very MEDIOCRE on Offense & should probably not even be Ranked while FRESNO ST. deserves a Higher Ranking.

That Michigan is ranked at all is an absolute joke. It just shows how much benefit of a doubt you are given as a big name program. If Virginia had the exact same roster and same record vs the exact same teams they would not even be discussed, much less being ranked 18th.

@6marK6 on a gimmie. They would have lost the game if not for the PAC 12 officiating debacle.

@6marK6A&M lost to the #1 team in the nation and has won all other games.  Do you expect the Aggies to drop out of the top 10 for winning?  ASU got their @sses handed to them....move on.

@Sportsfan18 The Associated Press still hands out a trophy to the team it determines is the national champion. Why should it stop just because someone else does too?

@ineedataxi @forensiclaw BTW, OSU back up has 6 touchdown passes in the first half. They don't throw a pass in the second half and are playing 3-4th stringers. Just sayin...

@carnage_2012 @entprof It really is. People clamor about the national championships, but those are pretty much exclusively Bama, LSU and Florida. Auburn bought one. Bama is great, no argument and LSU is strong. But nobody else in the West or East is crap.
