Report: Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon suspended for a quarter over throat-slash gesture

Alabama’s T.J. Yeldon (4) was reportedly suspended one quarter for a throat-slash gesture. (David J. Phillip/AP)

Who would have thought Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon’s throat-slash gesture in the end zone last week at Texas A&M would cause such a ruckus? Marq Burnett of The Anniston Star is reporting through a source “close to the situation” that Yeldon will be suspended for a quarter against Colorado State on Saturday after his unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the 49-42 win over the Aggies.

Burnett added that an “athletics department spokesman declined to confirm or deny any disciplinary action against Yeldon.”

While this may seem like a big deal on the surface, ‘Bama is trying to figure out its running back pecking order behind Yeldon, as the AP’s Ralph Russo points out.

Had the Crimson Tide’s next opponent been Ole Miss or LSU, it seems more likely that Yeldon would have received a stern talking to (which we’d assume he already has, anyway) but no suspension. Yeldon is Alabama’s leading rusher with 224 yards (5.3 yards per carry) through the team’s first two games.

Assuming this is the standard penalty for celebratory throat-slash gestures, let’s consider it a good thing that the Thunder’s Kevin Durant never suited up for ‘Bama:

Why not send him to his room without any supper? An absurd punishment.

Which quarter will he sit out?

How pathetic. One quarter penalties are worthless! Toss players on the bench for a full game! That may get a point across to them.

Give Saban credit here.  No need to do this regardless of opponent or Tb competition, Hope the message gets through!

Ridiculous....

Then again, the NFL's minor leagues want unemotional robots. They're gladiators. Let 'em...gladiate....(?)

Jeez...let the kids be kids. I prefer a harmless throat-slash gesture to that oddly effeminate skipping thing players do now...

Wow, wait to drop the hammer Tide Nation. The guy in charge of handing punishment in the SEC is the same guy that tips a dollar.

If signing autographs for money gets you two quarters then a throat slash should be an extra 40 yard windsprint.

a one quarter ban? lol

Just send a message by banning him for a full game or dont do it at all.  one quarter is more of a small break to rest your legs more than anything.

Might as well have sent a message and banned him for one game.  Alabama is only playing some garbage Colorado State team anyways

I AM an Alabama fan and make no apologies for it! Yeldon already APOLOGIZED! God, what a bunch of moronic idiots with IQs less than room temperature! What a nit-picky bunch of little-girl crap! You can't beat the Tide, so you gotta talk CRAP and cheat!

I'm really puzzled by this one. What I saw on the replay of this seemed to be mimicing Johnny Football's "Superman" gesture / taunt where he uses BOTH arms to mimic Superman tearing off his business suit to reveal his "S" underneath. If you watch Manziel's trick shot video with Dude Perfect, that's all either of them does after making a trick shot.

I'm not an Alabama fan, (FAR from it), but if I'm right, this is a pretty stupid unless Saban is trying to discourage ANY taunting ever. As for the NCAA, nothing they do would surprise anymore.

@btcvsolo The depth of depravity and lack of social recognition in your post is frightening.  I hope you haven't bred yet.

@andymaxo Clearly your IQ is equally low or else you'd have spotted the irony of hurling such epithets as "moronic idiots" and "nit-picky bunch of little-girl crap" while accusing others of having a low IQ. Funny! Tell me: is your impressive intellect typical of Alabama football fans or of college football fans in general?

@PWINGS Exactly.  No taunting ever.  That is not the way you act if you want to play at Bama.

@WHO*IS*ESPN So he's an Uncle Tom because he didn't punish him publicly? How do you know something wasn't done in-house? Did you even see his interviews reprimanding him? And why is he a token? Are you saying he got his job because of affirmative action? You are so wise, dude.

@John52 @PWINGS  not a 'Bama man myself however a 1 quarter penalty is pathetic. and @PWINGS I agree that taunting shouldn't be allowed period and a penalty flag should be tossed every time with 15 yards to the negative. Also it's not the way you want to act playing for any team, not just Bama.

@John52 @PWINGS Sportsmanship issues aside, it's a stupid habit to get into for risk of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty which can be pivotal in a close game. The sportsmanship issues themselves are obvious.

In any case, I still think he was mimicing Manziel's "Superman" schtick and not making a "throat slash". The only people who've used that term to describe this incident are the media folk who are just hyping a story, as usual. Whatever its significance, it resulted in a dumb penalty.
