Michigan athletic department paid for “Go Blue” skywriting over MSU stadium

Michigan State Spartans, Michigan Wolverines

Rivalries are the absolute best. Last week, someone skywrote (is that the appropriate past tense term?) all over East Lansing and other parts of Michigan, including writing “GO BLUE” above Spartan Stadium before Michigan State’s game vs. Youngstown State in Week 3.

RICKMAN: Between The Hashes Week 3: Foxes, skywriting and corn microphones

So who did it? An overzealous fan? An alumni group? A message board?

Nope. The Michigan athletic department. From MLive:

Suzanne Asbury-Oliver, who runs Oregon Aero SkyDancer skywriting with her husband Steve, said the Wolverines’™ athletic department hired her business to put Michigan slogans into the air above Ann Arbor then East Lansing on Saturday.

Michigan athletic department spokesperson Dave Ablauf acknowledged his department paid for Saturday’s skywriting but said no specific locations were targeted.

This is some old-school, truly smart rivalry trolling. Billboards are so 2000-and-late. Next thing you know someone’ll be canvasing a car and yelling “ROLL TIDE” out a bullhorn down the street in Auburn or Washington State will pay for a sponsorship on Seattle radio.

Amazing how some people are so sore and stiff that they can't even have fun with something like this

Its a college rivalry - onus is on MSU to come up w/ something next and Im sure it will be fun and inventive and will spice up the rivalry even more - lighten up people.

To all those making comments about money and paying athletes: really?  Here is a lighthearted moment entirely paid for by donation money... and somehow the haters have to whine.

again - lighten up people

This is why we love college football. They do ridiculous things like this. Michigan should have painted the plane to look Harry Potter on his broomstick.  Now THAT would be original.

Maybe they should have worried more about Akron than what was going on in East Lansing. If MSU wanted to get back at UM, they could always hire a skywriter to put "Go Appalachian State" above Ann Arbor.

The bull horn has been done already. that's so 1970's.  Big Blue has set the bar high I hate to admit.  More imagination will be needed.  DO NOT INSERT TREE JOKES HERE.  Pranks should be funny but not harmful.

Hoke wanted to do it himself but they didn't have a jumbo jet big enough for his large a$$ available

I bet all the Wal-Mart Wolverine fans loved it!  Speaking of, A Michigan football fan was almost killed yesterday in a tragic horse back riding accident. He fell from the horse and was nearly trampled to death. Luckily, the manager of the Wal-Mart came out and unplugged the horse.

constant tuition hikes, exorbitant textbook markups, and $4 to do laundry is all starting to make sense!

Well now we know how Michigan is spending the $200m that Stephen Ross gave them. #charityfail

@crimsonmastodon agree that the Toomer thing was sad and extremely distasteful - no matter how bitter a rival, its a sport and all pranks should be in good fun and not cause any property damage or harm

@AaronDunckel @rkcla08 Not quite...getting in isn't difficult, it's the work upon entering that makes it tough...

A guy in a bar leans over to the guy next to him and says, "Wanna hear a Michigan joke?" The guy next to him replies, "Well before you tell that joke, you should know something. I'm 6' tall, 200 lbs., and I am a Michigan alumnus. The guy sitting next to me is 6'2 tall, weighs 225, and he's a Michigan alumnus. The fella next to him is 6'5 tall, weighs 250, and he's a Michigan alumnus. Now, you still wanna tell that joke?" The first guy says, "Nah, not if I'm gonna have to explain it 3 times."

funny... you can make Michigan jokes all day - but they have no teeth... but in the end its the elite academic school with a more cultured and educated fan base than all but a few schools in the country...  and if you are indeed from MSU - its so not close its laughable
