Charles Barkley: ‘Johnny Manziel is annoying me so much’

Charles Barkley won’t be rooting for Johnny Manziel when No. 6 Texas A&M welcomes No. 1 Alabama to College Station on Saturday.

Barkley, an Auburn alum, told ESPN Radio 1000 in Chicago that despite his background as a fan of the Tigers, he’s likely to pull for the rival Crimson Tide this weekend because of the Aggies’ high-profile quarterback.

“Johnny Manziel, he’s doing something I never thought was possible. He’s going to make me root for Alabama this weekend.

“I never thought I would say those words. I am so close to saying ‘Roll Tide.’ Johnny Manziel is annoying me so much. I’m really close to saying ‘Roll Tide.’”

Barkley was reminded that Auburn fans wouldn’t be happy with his statement.

“They’re not going to be happy,” Barkley admitted. “But let me tell you something. Johnny Manziel, oh my God, the only thing saving Manziel is Miley Cyrus … I just think that Johnny Manziel has done a lot of stupid stuff in the last three or four months.”

Barkley is no stranger to criticizing Manziel. In July he joined a roundtable discussion on Birmingham’s WJOX radio, saying he preferred Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s leadership to Manziel’s.

“Manziel is a better player,” Barkley explained. “McCarron is a better leader. Manziel is a terrific player, but as far as being a leader, AJ McCarron has done a fantastic job. He’s under so much pressure. To be the Alabama quarterback, back-to-back national championships, the pressure that comes with that to have a good game every week, he’s handled it amazingly.”

Just shut up, Charles. You're a well-documented phony. Talk about someone people are annoyed by so much....

Charles Barkley is a fat, ugly, stupid racist.

He's allowed to be a racist because of melanin. Period.

I've heard him speak, so I wonder how much these quotes were cleaned up.

Wow is that Sir Charles or the love child of  "Stay Puft" and the "Michelin man"  I know you love eating Charles but for the love of starving children everywhere push away from the table, leave something in the trough for others...

I do agree with Barkley  I cannot stand Manziel either !!!

People keep criticizing Charles in this - which I sort of understand, since he was a loud-month type of guy throughout his career.  But we need MORE of Charles Barkley, not less.

In an era where everyone is PC all the time, nobody offends anyone, everyone is walking on eggshells and giving coach-speak answers, Charles says what alot of people really think, alot of the time.   He might be blut and to the point about it, but he says whats really under the surface, and doesn't give the sissy-answers that most others in the media or sports industry do.  Good for you Charles - keep on keeping on.

and NONE of this changes the fact that Manziel really truly is a jackwagon spoiled jerk - and all the stuff that is being said about him from all these ex-players and media types, is just about all true.  Weather you like the messenger or not, the message still is accurate

Barley calling someone out as being "annoying."   Now that is just priceless.  That is like Donald Trump calling someone "self absorbed."  Might be true, but the messenger doesn't have anything over on them.

Can someone tell me why ANYONE cares what this arrogant self-promoting has-been ex-basketball player, who once spit on a little girl seated next to a heckling fan when he was with the Suns, has to say about college football, the weather, the price of tea in China, or anything else? Yep, I'm a Barkley-hater.

This coming from the guy that told us years ago that he was not and did not want to be a role model for our kids...what a buffoon!

Barkley never graduated from Auburn. he just played basketball there for 3 years and according to his records is still just a freshman.

Wow. You've heard Barkley speak? Where? Most of us never hear him. He should be on some kind of panel show, so others can hear him speak.

@KeithSmithMusic No one cares about your opinion on Barkley unless you're contributing to the discussion. So next time, keep your irrelevant comments to yourself and get back in the studio because your music is probably awful.

@C6StingRay  he says how he feels, and doesn't hold back, in a world full of PC garbage and pre-packaged answers

Coming from an expert like Chuck. It must be true.

Manziel is now OFFICIALLY annoying.

@Robert96 Manziel is an immature jerk.  And I go to A&M.  I'm rooting for the school but not him.  Roberto, do you even know what he said about leaving CStat?  He needs a dose of humility.  You can enable him all you want w/ your support, but it's not right for that youngblood.

@geritolg  unlike Manziel though, he's paid his dues and now gets PAID to give his opinions.  He doesn't hold back, give "coach-speak" responses, or walk on eggshells.  Good for him.

@Terry @Robert96   Truthfully, I have to agree...........but I hope he matures into a solid citizen someday and continues to give us his impression of Frantic Fran Tarkington when he makes the pros.

@HoundofJustice @Robert96 You're not rooting for him?  If he plays poorly the team can't do well.  It doesn't work that way.  If you want the team to do well you want Johnny to do well.  Period.  He's not broken any laws.  I wish he would've done some things differently, but I support him.  I'll be glad when he's gone just to get away from the whole circus, but a lot of it is not his fault.  As long as he's still there, though, I want him to tear it up.  I hope he plays with a chip on his shoulder because in the end all the vitriol that's been thrown his way has not been proportional to the offenses.  Especially from ESPN.  And this thing with Barkley....ridiculous.  As an Aggie, nothing would ever get me to root for Texas.  No matter who the other team's quarterback is.

HoundofJustice
HoundofJustice

@mlvielhaber  I'm not rooting for him.  I have my own morals and the crap that he has pulled is unacceptable.  As an Aggie, how can you stand for someone that talks bad about your school while he is benefiting from it.  Keep in mind we do have back-up quarterbacks and winning isn't everything, there are other important things in life.  And let's not get into the "he's not broken any laws" BS.  College football is a business and I wouldn't be surprised if there was some under the table shenanigans to allow him to play this season.  I'm calling you out McVielHabanero, stop being blinded by championship ambition and realize that this "circus" is creating a monster.  Gig 'em and stop enabling.  #BetterWorld
