Texas AD DeLoss Dodds: Mack Brown is ‘fine’ as Longhorns head coach

Last Saturday, BYU routed Texas 40-21 after rushing for an astounding 550 yards. While Longhorns coach Mack Brown fired defensive coordinator Manny Diaz the next day, many fans feel that Brown is more responsible for the program’s recent struggles. Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds is seemingly not among them.

Dodds told the Austin American-Statesman that while the controversy surrounding the 1-1 Longhorns is “a perfect storm,” Brown’s job security is not in immediate danger:

“Mack’s fine,” Dodds said. “I know we didn’t play well Saturday. Mack will know if he should be coaching (at Texas) or shouldn’t be. I know this is my responsibility, and I’m not shying away from it. The bottom line is I’m for the kids and the coaches.”

Brown has won 151 games during his tenure at Texas, including the 2005 BCS title. But his record has slipped to 23-17 over the past three-plus seasons. Rumors swirled that Brown met with Dodds and university president Bill Powers over the weekend, but Dodds denied that, saying that he expects Brown to remain part of the program’s future:

“Mack loves the game. He’s good for Texas. He’s going to be a part of what his future is. I think the perfect storm scenario is apropos. I told Mack, ‘It’s a long season. There’s lots of time to do good things.’”

Good grief, look at the picture. Mack is old, fat and tired. I love it, though, I live in Oklahoma! Go Sooners and Pokes!

I hope Mack and DeLoss will be there for many years to come.  After all, I do enjoy ut being mediocre.

Oliver Luck at West Virginia would be an "Excellent" ...Athletic Director for the Texas Longhorns!

Art Biles at Baylor would be an "Excellent" ...Head Football Coach at Texas!

Deloss Dodds and Mack Brown have done a good job for a long time.

Now it is time to Retire and Many Thanks for the Memories!

More UT fans would like to see Dodds fired than Brown. Look at the salaries he is paying his football, baseball, and basketball coaches and look at what he is getting from each. They are all sliding down hill fast. He should be fired first.

DeLoss Dodds is part of the problem.  Why do you ask the fox if the chickens are okay?

These were the same words that came out of Steve Pedersons mouth about Callahan ... right before Pederson lost his job, and then T.O walked in and fired a stunned Callahan.

@Cool Sure except at Callahan's rate of 6 wins per season it would have taken him 25.2 years to reach 151 wins and at 6 wins a season you don't win National Championships.

@3-8 @Cool Callahan was a bigger loser, no doubt. But to Horns fans, Brown has had huge advantages in resources and talent that dictate he should have produced much better teams the last five years. Even last year, with nine wins, Brown could not point to one quality victory and many embarrassing losses.

@6marK6 @3-8 @Cool I agree wholeheartedly.  The point I was trying to make, with a coach and AD I am familiar with, was that AD's should be careful with making such statements because often times they are the first to go, and that pretty much is a signal the coach is next.
