Penn State has finally named its starting quarterback. According to ESPN’s Josh Moyer, true freshman Christian Hackenberg will start for the Nittany Lions against ACC new member Syracuse on Saturday in East Rutherford, N.J.

The 6-foot-4 freshman from Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy was a five-star recruit and the No. 2 quarterback in the class of 2013, according to Rivals.com. Hackenberg committed to Bill O’Brien’s team over offers from Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina, among others.

From the ESPN article:

Hackenberg will become just the second true freshman in the last century to start at quarterback for the Nittany Lions. Shorty Miller became the first in 1910, and Rob Bolden made his debut in 2008.

Hackenberg will start ahead of Tyler Ferguson, a 6-3 sophomore who transferred to Penn State from the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, Calif. The Nittany Lions are looking to replace the production of the departed Matt McGloin, who threw for 46 touchdowns in his career at Penn State. McGloin is currently fighting for a roster spot on the Oakland Raiders.

Great fact checking...  May want to look up Tony Sacca.  The first true freshman to start for JoePa.

@ChadMoyer - Nobody likes to remember Sacca, QB during PSU's first losing season since the 1930s. Unfortunately those of us whose freshman year also started in 1988 will never forget Sacca,
