Wisconsin reveals new red helmets

Wisconsin will sport a new red helmet for at least one game this season, the school announced in a fall camp video released Thursday.

New coach Gary Andersen told the Badgers in a team meeting that the new red helmets with white letters would be worn in a game against Tennessee Tech and perhaps additional games.

“That’s a little bit of a new tradition,” Andersen said. “But there’s a rich, rich tradition here that you understand, and you all know we all have great respect for that. So we’re molding that to be respectful of traditions, and trying to be on the cutting edge is what we’re trying to do.”

The new domes are an inverse of the white helmets with red letters that the Wisconsin traditionally wears (and will still wear). Even with a simple reversal of colors, though, it’s a pretty sweet look for the Badgers.

You can watch the helmet announcement on the video below (skip ahead to the 4:20 mark).

I love it. First red helmet for Bucky since, I think, the late 1960s. The uniforms since Alvarez  came have been too light and Nebraska-like. This is a good change; no bring back real cardinal instead of Nebraska red.

Why is this even a story?  Could there be anything less significant than this?  Especially since the "cutting edge" changes are a simple reversal of colors.  That took a genius.

BFD. It's red and white instead of white and red. I thought Madison was more radical than that.

Put Bucky on the helmet, the one where he's flippin' the bird.

@Hlas @skywaker9 These teams will need more than red and white helmets to look at all like the Ducks. But hats off for trying something new.

Eh, not as good looking as the normal white helmet.  Too many red with white lettering helmets out there already.

Artists abound in Madison, and Wisconsin.  Most could come up with something better in their sleep than this over-stated, over-weight, wacko W that Badger faithful will have to live with for another twenty years.

And "cutting edge?"  That's cute, Gary, and straight outta' the Nike handbook.

@rbmattson I have watched that game 10 times at least and still don't know why Wisconsin didn't run on every down.

@rbmattson In fairness that was a great game and I heard the Badger fans are great.

@Hlas @GaryConkling @skywaker9 Not everyone.  UM helmets have been the same since I was a toddler, except for that one game with the black sleeves and the metallic green lids.
