Clemson will host College GameDay in Week 1; did ESPN make right choice?
The offseason’s worst-kept secret is finally out. ESPN announced from Clemson on Tuesday that the Tigers will host the first College GameDay of the 2013 season before their matchup with Georgia on Aug. 31.

Certainly, this is one of the most anticipated games of Week 1, with both teams ranked in top 10 in the preseason Coaches’ Poll. But was the pick too obvious?
Georgia and Clemson will have plenty of opportunities to host GameDay if they live up to their preseason billing. And if one of the teams is a pretender, then hey, a precious GameDay was wasted. Do you want that on your conscience, ESPN? Did the appeal of Western Kentucky at Kentucky escape you? Was the Battle For The Triangle (North Carolina Central at Duke) too hot to handle? Are you afraid to cover North Illinois at Iowa?
Realistically, though, the only other games that made sense were Alabama-Virginia Tech or LSU-TCU, and both are at neutral locations. I’m excited for this game, and for Clemson fans to get the chance to show off. Here are some reasons why Clemson deserves this season’s first GameDay (and more):
