Careful what you wish for Bob Stoops, Twitter can get super annoying

At Big 12 media days, the subject of how to handle social media came up (as it often does). Fanatical fans bombard recruits with nonstop tweets, begging and pleading Larry Fivestar and Bernie Fullback to come to their school.

When a player — gasp! — decides to go to a school, he kind of wants to be supported. Because, you know, picking a college is a tough decision, and he’s 18, and he doesn’t really know anything and even choosing to add sour cream to his Chipotle burrito bowl can be a day-ruiner.

Instead, the fans turn on the kid. They call him spineless. They swear at him. Sometimes, they send him death threats. It’s creepy, immoral and more than a little sad. A program’s success never hinges on one kid’s letter of intent, but one kid’s success often depends on the people around him being supportive and a community being there to put him in the best position to succeed.

That’s why it came as a bit of a surprise when Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, this offseason’s biggest Grumpy Cat™, sided with the maniacal tweeters. Per an article from Casey Murdock of SoonerScoop:

“That’s something that’s becoming a part of it,” said Stoops when asked if he had concerns about fans contacting recruits on Twitter. “We may hire you to govern our social media with the fans.”

“I’m not kidding,” he said. “I don’t see it stopping. Once things get rolling, it’s not stopping.”

Let me help you out, Coach Stoops. I know you don’t have a Twitter account, but I’d like to give you a taste of what it’s like to experience the dark side of the social media site. So I sent you these fake tweets. Let it be a lesson: Whether you’re kidding or not, it kind of pretty much needs to stop.

Not such a good thing to ‘get on board’ with, huh Coach? And that’s just from one science-loving genius of our time. Imagine the kinds of things a Finebaum caller would say.
