SIU-Southeast Missouri State to play first football game at Busch Stadium

Move over, Cardinals fans. Football is set to take over your ballpark. Southeast Missouri State and Southern Illinois are slated to play the first college football game at Busch Stadium, the home of MLB’s St. Louis Cardinals, this fall. The two longtime rivals will face off on Sept. 21 in the 81st installment of the series.
“We are thrilled to host our first football game in Busch Stadium with two great schools that have such a large following in St. Louis,” said Bill DeWitt III, president of the Cardinals, on the team’s website. “We are excited to showcase the versatility of Busch Stadium as a multi-use sports venue.”
The matchup will serve as the second major non-baseball sporting event held at Busch Stadium, as it’s also scheduled to host a soccer game between English Premier League teams Chelsea and Manchester City in May. Only time will tell how this fall’s game will stack up to Northwestern’s forgettable gridiron excursions at Wrigley Field, which won’t be ending any time soon, it seems.
