Report: Ex-LSU star Tyrann Mathieu failed more than 10 drug tests
By Zac Ellis
Ex-LSU star Tyrann Mathieu, formerly known as the “Honey Badger,” might have gotten away with more than people thought during his days in Baton Rouge. According to USA Today, Mathieu told one NFL team during a pre-draft interview that the number of drug tests he failed at LSU went into double digits.
According to an assistant coach for the team, Mathieu responded: “I quit counting at 10. I really don’t know.”
The NFL assistant coach explained that not all the blame should fall on Mathieu, though. He holds LSU responsible for enabling one of its star players.
“If he flunked 10 tests before they suspended him, it shows that he got no kind of help,” the coach said.
Mathieu, who says he has been clean since October, was kicked off LSU’s team last August after he failed drug tests and was arrested for possession of marijuana two months later. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011 and is projected as a second- or third-round pick in this month’s NFL draft.
On Friday afternoon LSU released a statement regarding Mathieu’s claims. The school denounced the USA Today story, stating that it “does not accurately reflect the discussions that [Mathieu] has had while on official visits to various NFL organizations.” You can read the full statement here.
Through LSU, Mathieu solidified his support for the school’s role in his treatment.
“LSU has a strong drug testing program and LSU went to great lengths to help me in my treatment and recovery.”
