Alabama football players arrested on robbery, fraud charges

Or, In Which We Should Have Known Better Than To Try And Go Out Of Town Today:

Johnny Manziel thwarts Alabama once again, gentle readers. Young Master Football’s Heisman Trophy victory means the Tide will be unable to complete the celebrated Switzer Sweep of winning the BCS championship, Fulmer Cup and Heisman Trophy in a single year, as Auburn did not too long ago. But ‘Bama’s making up for missing out on the third element of the Slam by going after the second as it does on the football field: With alarming depth and relentless tenacity.

Crimson Tide running back Brent Calloway, linebacker Tyler Hayes, defensive lineman D.J. Pettway and safety Eddie Williams have all been arrested and charged in connection with an incident in which two students were robbed, and a credit card obtained in the attack was used to purchase … vending machine snacks? College! Charge details, per the Associated Press:

Pettway and Hayes were charged with second-degree robbery. Williams was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card and second-degree robbery. Calloway was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card.

In an extra legal flourish, Williams was previously arrested just this past Sunday for carrying a gun without a permit.

All four players have been suspended from the football team; Nick Saban offers up this statement:

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people. The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

This is hard to swallow.  Something has got to be wrong here.  You don't make it to the big time and then F it up like this.  Everyone knows their faces,..  They had to be stupid drunk to pull something like this and think they would get away.  They took the kids snack card and went to the vending machine.  Why!?

When you play a major sport at a major U your education is not FREE , you earn it.  They should pay these players a stipend as they do not have time to hold down a parttime job.  Their full time job is playing the sport.

Suspended until proven guilty. If found guilty I hope Bama shows they have integrity and give these guys the boot. If it is being reported a lot worse than it is and they are found innocent, they should be re-instated. Let the justice system do it's thing before passing judgement based off an article.

@Anonymous_Source Saban does not put up with this and he has the talent to cut them loose. Indefinite suspension is Saban's way of saying they are all gone. It always does. They all admitted to either assault or fraudulent use of a credit card according to the Tuscaloosa News. Admitted is the keyword. Williams was already arrested earlier in the week for having a gun without a permit. Calloway may have been allowed to stay if he hadn't already screwed up his first year, but he did. It also doesn't help him that this new class is full of really good RBs.

Suspended indefinitely. Until practice starts, I guess.

This story is getting more scary by the hour. Approaching the victims then knocking them out. First, I hope the victims fully recover from the physical and emotional wounds. Second, I hope these perps get help in altering their current path because it is only going to lead them to a tragic place.

@AllisGrace These very talented players have such a sense of entitlement that almost no crime is beneath them. We hear it year after year.

You can't fix stupid - the players, if guilty should lose their scholarships and be dropped from the team

I'm guessing that all four of them will be back with the team by the start of next season.  Especially since they are all freshmen....the coach and school will say they did this, that, or other and they've learned from this and won't be making the same mistake again.  They've grown since this incident and they all understand what the requirements are to be a member of the Crimson Tide.  All horse pucky in my opinion - college football earns the university (and way to many people) to much money.  But I won't lie - I watch it religiously every week (not Alabama) and I'm sure my university of choice has and will continue to treat it's players the same way.

    I guess a free education wasn't enough.
