James Franklin calls out Nick Saban, speaks message board

James Franklin, National Signing Day, Nick Saban, Recruiting, THIS IS STUPID

“There’s this guy in Alabama, I think his name is Nicky Satan, you guys’ve probably heard of him before. I’m gonna outwork him. I’m gonna outwork him, and that’s kind of our plan every single day.” – James Franklin

So this is how this works: We see the above video and we ignore it, for three reasons: First, we have this pathological aversion to a particular strain of message-board speak, whose devotees find the height of humor in spelling USC with a dollar sign in the middle, or Texas with a lower-case T, or calling the former Florida and current Ohio State head coach Urban Cryer like that’s a thing. This kind of stuff has power to repulse us beyond any reasonable capacity, and we don’t really care to explore why, so we steer clear of it.

Second, there’s such a fast and obvious “SCOREBOARD BRAH” retort to this that we think even our most feverishly indoctrinated ‘Bama cousins might roll their eyes and continue about their days without bothering to make it a thing. Rivals’ stars are not crystal footballs; outworking is not outwinning; ‘Bama is ‘Bama and Vandy, however improved, remains Vandy for the moment. World without end, Amen.

Third, we know what’s coming next, before anybody in Nashville can get all pearl-clutchy about whether or not Franklin’s truly a committed Christian — although if there’s one thing we learned growing up in Tennessee, it’s that there’s nothing more Christian than telling folks what does and does not constitute evil in the world of men: “Vanderbilt football coach James Franklin said he phoned Alabama’s Nick Saban on Wednesday to apologize for referring to the four-time national championship coach as ‘Nicky Satan.’”

“I made a joke,” Franklin said to The Tennessean. “And in today’s society with all the media and social media and people with tape recorders and things like that, that doesn’t come off that way.” James Franklin has every awareness there were cameras in that room, knows that it’s difficult to misconstrue his words when we can see those words being spoken and, with the greatest of ease, executes the tired power move of shifting the blame for any offense taken onto Today’s Society and The Media.

And while Franklin cannily blames The Media, we’re over here doing exactly what he wants, which is to ask, breathlessly, “Well, IS he outworking Nick Saban?” and bring up Vanderbilt’s promising recruiting rankings just days before National Signing Day. That’ll be the story tomorrow. WMAZ has since put a pre-roll ad in front of that video. My producer tells me that a coach calling another coach the Devil makes people want to click. I am part of the problem. Sorry about that.

This is where we’d normally drop a grudging “well played” to Franklin, but lord have mercy, to do that joke when the better one’s just sitting there. Do I have to do everything around here?

Coach Franklin did nothing more than try to build his team up. Every team does this. It was a dumb comment but nothing that is going to kill anyone. I am sure Coach Saban laughed at it.

Vandy is automatically better than Bama just in its very nature - simply because it is a top-notch university.... and bama is an academic joke

WOW...Vandy, review your hiring requirements. Isn't the Head Coach supposed to be at least as smart as the students?

Just askin'...

He should go back to focusing on assistant coaches hot wives and leave football to the big boys of the SEC.

What a silly comment. How much mpney does the academics bring to Vandy and how much does the football program? This story is about sports not academics. Vandy is in fact a great academics school. One of the best in the south. But that has nothing to do with the story. Your comment is for losers that can't brag about the sports program. All the losers say My school is smarter than your school. Ok, we're impressed, Next!!! If you start an academics bowl to see who is smarter then you can proclaim Vandy is better. Me personally, I would love to see this happen just to prove who is in fact better. I would laugh my ass off if Bama were to beat out the "smarter" schools. Bama has very high academic standards. You choose to mix sports with academics. One has nothing to do with the other.

@AaronDunckel It's awfully easy to caste dispersion at Alabama or any other university when all you have to regurgitate is internet fodder, isn't it Aaron?  I'd suggest you go back to your mama's basement and play games with imaginary friends.  It's no better or worse than what you'e doing here.

@LonnieLaShum thats odd....considering these are sports teams attached to Universities.... which are centers of higher learning and academic thought.... yeah god forbid we place one school over another because it FULFILLS ITS MISSION as an institution more thoroughly.  And this is not internet fodder.... everyone knows the academic standing of these schools

Sorry 'bama homers, but yeah, your school is good at football...  and football alone - some schools can do both.... I applaud those institutions above the Sports/Party  schools

If you want a semi-pro football team and crappy academics, go to a community college and then head to a CFL or arena league game, otherwise, be a University - not a football program with a school attached

@AaronDunckel; look human can you not tell the difference if football stories and ademics stories? Why didn't you post the grad rates of all students and student athletes of these schools? Instead of saying a blanket statement like you did. No matter though. It is just dumb to talk about academics when the story is about sports. But just so you know chucklehead here are a few stats about student athletes; " Football heavyweights LSU (No 6, 77% GSR), Alabama (No. 7, 75%) and Florida (No. 8, 75%) led the way for the SEC. Those teams are all in the top six of the coaches poll. That's 6-7-8 in the NATION.
