Hold up: Is the Sun Belt taking on for-profit technical colleges now? [SPOILER ALERT] No. Not yet. Although this may be a targeted ad buy on the part of a for-profit technical college in search of some fat FBS dollars, and we expect to hear more on University of Phoenix-to-the-WAC just any day now.
Inconveniently-placed ad aside, Ron Hunter is in fact Georgia State’s basketball coach, and will be joining the Sun Belt along with the Bill Curry-led football Panthers. The move was announced in an Atlanta press conference Monday afternoon.
The transition will take effect beginning with the 2013 season, and comes with all sorts of agreeable symmetry. From the conference press release:
Georgia State was a founding member of the Sun Belt Conference in 1976 but left the conference in 1981. In 1984, the school joined the Trans America Athletic Conference, which was renamed the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2001, and then moved to the Colonial Athletic Association in 2005. [...] President Becker noted that the move to the Sun Belt Conference will take place in 2013, the same year that Georgia State University, founded in 1913, celebrates its centennial.
After two seasons of existence, Georgia State has amassed a 9-13 record, and will play its first and only season as a football member of the CAA in 2012.
